Field goals are rare in college football, but that makes our Week 9 NCAAF picks even tastier when it comes to betting value.
Another Saturday, another chance to binge on delicious college football props. These bets offer some of the highest potential profit margins you can get, and many of them don’t require too much extra work if you’re already surfing the NCAAF odds.
Consider, for example, the always-popular First Score Method prop. There are 3 possible picks for this bet on the college football odds board at Bovada (visit our Bovada Review):
- Field Goal
- Any Other
As any old-school handicapper would tell you, casual fans are likely to overbet Touchdown for this prop, because that’s what fans want to see: lots and lots of touchdowns. Field goals, on the other hand, go down about as well as castor oil. Nobody wants to see a field goal attempt at any point during the game.
Safeties can happen, too, but they’re so rare that you’re not going to get any real value from betting Any Other. So let’s rack up 3 games where the Field Goal prop has the best chance of cashing in, starting with a matchup featuring the busiest kicker in the FBS.
Wyoming Cowboys vs. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
Saturday, October 29, 2022 – 11:59 PM EDT at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex
The Cowboys have both attempted (19) and made (17) more field goals this year than any other FBS team, with John Hoyland providing the leg. Hoyland was just named a midseason All-American by Pro Football Focus; the sophomore has already earned Mountain West Player of the Week honors 3 times for special teams and Hoyland has already had 2 games this year where he kicked 4 figgies, vs. Northern Colorado and Tulsa.
The other team in this matchup is Hawaii, where PK Matthew Shipley is 9-for-10 on his field-goal attempts. That’s not a lot, but the Warriors have also scored just 17 touchdowns this year, tying them at No. 116 among the 131 teams in the FBS.
Wyoming hasn’t done much better at 20 touchdowns (No. 98), making it even more likely that 3 points will be going on the scoreboard instead of 6.
The one tricky part with this prop is the weather: crosswinds of around 15 mph are in the forecast for Hawaii’s temporary stadium, which is also their practice field. Work on the New Aloha Stadium is expected to begin next year.
However, with few touchdowns in the forecast and a total of 50 points on the NCAAF odds board at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), we’ll take our chances with the accurate appendages of Hoyland and Shipley.
NCAAF Pick: Field Goal (+180) at Bovada
Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders vs. UTEP Miners
Saturday, October 29, 2022 - 09:00 PM EDT at Sun Bowl
UTEP is 1 of 5 teams tied for 2nd place with 15 field goals, all provided by the right instep of senior PK Gavin Baechle, who has missed just one attempt of any kind this season.
Baechle has 3 C-USA special teams POY awards this year alone and he doesn’t have much competition in the scoring department; the Miners only have 19 TDs (No. 105) thus far.
Middle Tennessee (7 FG, 25 TDs) isn’t the perfect opponent for this prop, but we’re in the capable hands... um, feet... of sophomore Zeke Rankin, who hasn’t missed a kick all year. And they’ll be at the Sun Bowl, on what should be a lovely evening in El Paso, with another lowish total of 51.5 points to help brighten our forecast.

Colorado State Rams vs. Boise State Broncos
Saturday, October 29, 2022 - 07:00 PM EDT at Albertsons Stadium
It should be a relatively calm and warm evening for late October in Boise, so we have no problem wrapping up this tour on their famous blue turf.
The Broncos are tied for 7th overall with 14 made field goals; junior PK Jonah Dalmas set the school record last year with 26 figgies, and he’s on pace to challenge that mark, thanks in part to BSU’s tepid offense, which has scored just 20 touchdowns heading into Week 8.
That’s almost twice as many touchdowns as Colorado State. The Rams have only found the end zone 11 times (No. 128), so even though they’ve only got 5 field goals from senior PK Michael Boyle on 7 attempts, we won’t complain too much here at the ranch.
If you thought those other 2 games looked ugly on paper, this one should take the cake; the 42.5-point total attached to this bad boy says it all. Bet accordingly at the best sportsbooks, and may the prolate spheroid be with you this Saturday.
