A new college football season does not start until August. That is a lot of time to ponder the possibilities for picking a Heisman Trophy winner for next season against the NCAAF odds.

Because this is a thought-provoking question, we will answer it on multiple levels to take into consideration the various football bettors.

Betting For Fun

If you are one to look over the Heisman college football odds long before the season and find a player you like or whatever reason to throw down $5 to $20 of fun money, by all means, do so.

As we have stated before here, it is your money, all we can do is make suggestions. If by chance you take a long shot and it comes in, you will have a betting story that could last a lifetime. One thing you should avoid is placing a significant amount of money on such a bet without giving yourself the best chance to win.

This could be the equivalent of your throwing money in the street. In this case, as a bettor looking to win, this is not roulette where you bet red or black, there are many options that should be researched.

Betting to Win

The next level up for any futures pick is knowing what you are wagering on and having done the research. As of January, these are the current odds from the Bovada (visit our Bovada Review) to win the Heisman.

2023 Heisman Trophy Odds

  • Caleb Williams +400
  • Drake Maye +1000
  • Michael Penix Jr. +1200
  • Bo Nix +1200
  • Jordan Travis +1200
  • Brock Vandagriff +1800
  • Quinn Ewers +1800
  • Sam Hartman +1800
  • Cade Klubnik +2000
  • Drew Allar +2000
  • Jayden Daniels +2000
  • Joe Milton +2000
  • J.J. McCarthy +2000

This is the list of the Top 13 current contenders who could be invited to New York as a finalist with a chance to win the hardware. If you want to give yourself the best chance to win you have to go over the kind of year each player had in 2022. Did they meet expectations, overachieve or underachieve?

Next, you want to look at each schedule of the team they are playing, who are their toughest opponents and will those contests be played at home or away. This gives you a foundation to make your best decision. Otherwise, you are best to pass altogether and build your off-season bankroll or take that $5 to $20 and just wing it as mentioned above.

We thought it was humorous on Twitter, someone claimed Deion Sanders’s son, Raheem, who will be playing quarterback at Colorado, would be a good “value bet” at +15000 odds. While Sanders might end up being a great coach in Boulder, as a program that is that low in the Pac-12, let alone the country, the Buffalos are not going to do enough winning to catch the imagination of Heisman voters no matter what kind of season Raheem has. Stay away from stupid.

Betting With Complete Knowledge

So you want to bet on the Heisman and have your chance to win? We gave you some of the basics, now you truly have to go to work.

You start by looking at the returning player(s) you are considering for your bet. Will the offensive line be a positive or a negative from the start of the season? Are there enough playmakers around your selection or does your chosen individual have to do it himself?

You also need to know about the defense, will your player get help to make his numbers shine with a better-than-average defense or will they devalue his statistics or win total? And of course, there is the transfer portal in today’s college football that could work for or against your NCAAF pick(s).

From here, look into the coaching position. Is there a new head coach and if so does the offense change and how so? If no head coach alteration, what about the offensive coordinator or position coach? Will this coach enhance or change how you view a player or team?

If you are willing to put in this much work to create the best possible options for success, then “Yes” you should bet on this futures option, and even make a good-sized wager. If not, save your cash where you have a better opportunity to win.
