Editor’s Note: This game was originally scheduled to tip off at 2:30 PM EST but was changed to 9:30 PM EST. Due to an issue with UCLA’s aircraft on Friday, “the team’s travel plans were altered.”, according to the Bruins’ official social media channels.
The Marquette Golden Eagles will welcome the UCLA Bruins to Fiserv Forum for what should be an exciting matchup between two phenomenal teams.
Let’s break down the NCAAB odds for this game.
UCLA Bruins vs. Marquette Golden Eagles
Saturday, December 11, 2021 – 09:30 PM EST at Fiserv Forum
The UCLA Bruins will play just its second road game of the season against the Marquette Golden Eagles. The Bruins were slated to take on the Washington Huskies earlier this week but saw their game get canceled with the Huskies in COVID protocol.
Therefore, the Bruins, while winning that game due to forfeit, haven’t played a game since December 1. The Bruins could be a bit rusty for this game. Or they can come out strong early and have all the energy in the world. We’ll still go over the stats, but keep in mind that UCLA hasn’t played in over a week now.
UCLA is shooting an effective field goal percentage of 52.8 percent while only turning the ball over 14 percent of the time. The Bruins have done well on both ends when it comes to rebounds, and can absolutely win the offensive rebounding battle against Marquette in this game.
The Bruins aren’t getting to the line very often this season but are shooting 39.2 percent from deep while also hitting 50 percent inside and 71.9 percent from the foul line. The offense is just phenomenal with so many returning players from last year’s March Madness team.
Defensively, UCLA has also looked solid but has areas where it can be beaten. The Bruins will dominate the defensive glass, especially knowing Marquette only gains 23.7 percent of offensive rebounds. However, there’s also a great chance that Marquette can get back on track offensively, at home.
Marquette is never shy from shooting threes but has only hit 32.4 percent from downtown. However, UCLA is allowing teams to shoot 34.1 percent from downtown. If Marquette gets open looks, at home, against UCLA, I’d like to believe those shots would be knocked down.
The Golden Eagles are also shooting 53.6 percent inside and even though UCLA has dominated defensively, they are shorthanded at the forward position if Myles Johnson, for example, gets in foul trouble.
Plus, Marquette’s defense is above average in every category. The Golden Eagles don’t excel at much but they do everything very soundly. That has earned them wins over teams like Illinois, Ole Miss, Kansas State, and West Virginia.
The UCLA Bruins have so much more experience in comparison to Marquette. But Marquette is so young that they forget how young they are by being so scrappy. The Golden Eagles have some huge wins this season and have really learned how to win as a program.
There are no guarantees that the Golden Eagles finish the job outright, but I’d like to believe that Marquette can get to the line at a higher rate while also hitting more threes in this game. Give me Marquette +5.5 for my NCAAB pick today.
