Iowa State Cyclones vs. Texas Longhorns

Tuesday, February 21, 2023 – 09:00 PM EST at Moody Center

Matchup Analysis

The Iowa State Cyclones will visit Texas to face the Longhorns in a late-night Big 12 matchup. The Cyclones have lost three of their last four games, including Saturday’s loss to Kansas State on the road. Still, they are 17-9 on the season and 8-6 in conference play. That’s been good enough to be ranked inside the Top 25.

Meanwhile, UT is ranked inside the Top 10. The Longhorns are 10-4 in conference play and already have 21 wins this season. Texas escaped Oklahoma last time, earning an overtime win at home against a mid-tier conference opponent.

The Longhorns have been incredible offensively this year. Texas has shot 34.2% from deep and 54.7% from inside the arc, plus they've hit over 75% of foul shots and should ultimately get to the foul line at a very high rate.

ISU fouls at one of the highest rates in America due to its aggressive defense style. They've held teams to 32.2% from deep and 49.3% from inside the arc. Opponents have earned 26.4% of offensive rebounds against them this season. But the Cyclones have earned nearly 26% of turnovers per game this season.

Typically, Texas is good at limiting turnovers, but they’ll have to be extra careful against Iowa State. Iowa State defeated Texas at home, earning a 78-67 win back in the middle of January.

Stick With Texas

ISU has shot 34% from deep and 51.2% from inside the arc. They rarely get to the foul line, but Texas has fouled at a higher rate. Still, the Cyclones hit just 67% from the foul line this season. That won’t help them pull off an upset here. They turned the ball over 19.4% of the time but at least earned 33.3% of offensive rebounds. If Iowa State wants to win this game, they will have to be very consistent on the offensive glass and earn more possessions.

Texas has allowed 29% of offensive rebounds this season. The defense has also watched teams shoot over 72% from the foul line this season. Ultimately, the Longhorns could still earn more turnovers than ISU in this game. The Longhorns have earned 22.3% of turnovers, and the Cyclones need to be more careful with the ball on most nights.

Both teams like to try and score inside more consistently. UT’s defense has held teams to a lower field goal percentage from inside the arc. They will also look to score quicker and beat Iowa State's pressure on the defense. The Cyclones have played many teams that love shooting from behind the arc. Texas isn’t that. The Longhorns want to get easy buckets around the rim.

I like Texas to pull off the home win over Iowa State and even the season series at one. Here are some college basketball picks that correlate with the analysis.

Aljaz Kunc (Iowa State) Over/Under Rebounds

  • Aljaz Kunc averages 5.1 rebounds per game this season.
  • He hasn’t reached more than five rebounds since returning from injury on February 4.
  • Kunc isn’t reliable on the offensive glass, which is the one area he will need to rebound to earn at least six rebounds.
  • Texas won’t take a bunch of long shots. They’ll shoot a high percentage from the floor when getting closer looks.

NCAAB Pick: Aljaz Kunc Under 5.5 Rebounds (-165) at BetOnline

Marcus Carr (Texas) Over/Under Points

  • Marcus Carr averages 17.1 points per game.
  • He added at least 16 points in each of his last four games.
  • The UT player has attempted at least 15 shots in three of his last four games.
  • Carr should get to the foul line at a high rate and shoots 78.5% from the foul line this season.

NCAAB Pick: Marcus Carr Over 15.5 Points (-115) at BetOnline

Marcus Carr (Texas) Over/Under Threes

  • Marcus Carr has attempted 16 three-pointers in his last two games.
  • Carr is coming off a game where he shot 0-for-7 from downtown against Oklahoma.
  • He only has one other conference game where he shot 0-for from downtown. Carr should get back on track at home.
  • Carr has seven games where he’s attempted at least eight threes. If he takes eight threes, expect him to nail at least two against Iowa State.

NCAAB Pick: Marcus Carr Over 1.5 Threes (-120) at BetOnline
