Matchup Analysis
Will Baylor Prevail on the Road?
The Baylor Bears are coming off a massive win against the Texas Longhorns, earning an 81-72 win at home. But before that game, the Bears lost two straight on the road to Kansas and Kansas State. Baylor is currently two games out of first place in the Big 12, but I still will suggest that Baylor is the best team in the Big 12. We’ll let the Big 12 Tournament help us find out.
Baylor is one of the best offenses in the nation. The Bears have nailed nearly 37% from downtown and 51.5% from inside the arc. The Bears have also hit 74.8% from the foul line and will get there at a high rate, especially against Oklahoma State. Baylor has earned 35.4% of offensive rebounds and will grab their fair share of second chances against the Cowboys.
The Cowboys have held teams to 31.1% from downtown and 45.8% from inside the arc. Oklahoma State does a great job of earning blocks and keeping teams out of the paint. It’s just that Oklahoma State will foul at an average pace and allow nearly 29% of offensive rebounds per game.
Oklahoma State Needs to Win
On the other hand, the Oklahoma State Cowboys need to win to have a chance at making the NCAA Tournament. They’re currently one of the last few teams in. They’re basically on the bubble. A win against Baylor would only help their situation.
The Cowboys have turned the ball over 20.8% of the time and have shot under 32% from three. Inside the arc is where the Cowboys will need to be efficient. They’ve shot 51.9% inside the arc, while Baylor has allowed teams to shoot 53.1% inside. Baylor’s going to take a ton of threes. Oklahoma State still takes many, but if the Cowboys can get stops and then try and score inside, they’ll have much more success offensively.
The Cowboys move the ball a little faster on the offensive end and should also add their fair share of offensive rebounds, second chances, and free throw attempts. Oklahoma State will likely lose the turnover battle, but the Cowboys have a good enough defense to take Baylor out of their game.
This will be an intriguing matchup for the Cowboys, who need to win to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive.
