San Diego is the site for a pair of betting dunks on Friday’s college basketball picks card, games that should have a March feel to them even if one takes place on an aircraft carrier.

Michigan State Spartans vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs

Friday, November 11, 2022 – 06:30 PM EST at USS Abraham Lincoln

Docked at NAS North Island for about 3 months now, the USS Abraham Lincoln will witness some maneuvers that are abnormal to the carrier and its crew when Tom Izzo and Michigan State collide with Mark Few and Gonzaga.

This one really could be a Sweet 16 preview on the first Friday night of the new campaign, and the best sportsbooks are expecting some nice action with Bulldogs favored by 11.5 points over the Spartans and 145.5 for the total.

Both Teams Have Future Dates With Kentucky

Izzo is famous for putting his Spartans through the wringer early with tough November schedules, but this year it’s ridiculous with a clash with Kentucky at the Champions Classic next week plus matchups with Villanova, Alabama, and Notre Dame, and whoever else lines up to play them in the packed field at the Phil Knight Invitational.

Don’t expect Few and the Bulldogs to feel sorry for Michigan State. Gonzaga has a tough slate of its own with Kentucky, Texas and Baylor guaranteed the next 3 weeks, plus whoever falls into their lap at the Phil Knight Legacy, that field including Duke, Purdue, and West Virginia.

State Has Won 4 of 5 Meetings

It has been nearly 11 years since the Spartans and Bulldogs last met. Michigan State got a huge performance out of Draymond Green in that December 2011 contest played in Spokane to win 74-67 as a 4-point road ‘dog.

That victory gave the Spartans a 4-1 advantage over the Bulldogs, one of Michigan State’s other wins coming in the Sweet 16 of the 2001 NCAA Tournament and Gonzaga’s lone triumph taking place in the semifinals of the 2005 Maui Invitational, a wild triple-overtime affair.

Line Movement on Spread and Total

The spread has ballooned since it was first sent out, with most shops opening Gonzaga as chalk in the 9-10 range.

Meanwhile, the total has been on the decline after it started in the mid-150s before dipping to its current level.

Gonzaga has the talent to beat any team by double digits, but my NCAA basketball pick will be on Michigan State to keep this one inside of 10 points.

BYU Cougars vs. San Diego State Aztecs

Friday, November 11, 2022 - 10:30 PM EST at Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl

One thing that will be interesting to see unfold as BYU transitions to the Big 12 is where the Cougars begin to lose some of their traditional rivalries with programs on the western side of the Lower 48.

We can only hope BYU will maintain its annual showdowns with San Diego State. The Cougars and Aztecs are near the end of a Friday night NCAAB odds board that finds San Diego State favored by 10 with 136.5-137 for the scoreboard target.

Cougs, Aztecs Win Season Openers

Mark Pope and the Cougars jumped out to a 9-0 lead in their opener on Monday against Idaho State, but it was a struggle after that and BYU actually trailed much of the 2nd half before surviving 60-56 and never coming close to covering a 23.5-point spread.

San Diego State had a similar spread to cover as 23-point chalk at Bookmaker (visit our Bookmaker Review) and eventually pushed that in an 80-57 win over Cal State Fullerton, but Brian Dutcher’s squad had their hands full in the first half with late turnovers almost allowing the Titans to pull off a backdoor cover.

BYU Has Won Last 2 Meetings

Their days as Mountain West rivals fittingly came to an end in the 2011 MWC Championship Game, but that didn’t end the Cougars and Aztecs getting together with Friday’s matchup marking the 5th consecutive season to play, as well as the 76th meeting in the series.

Brigham Young won its 2nd in a row 364 days ago in Provo, a 66-60 final that doubled the 3-point chalk on the Cougars and gave them a 2:1 advantage in the all-time series with a 50-25 record. The last 4 games at Viejas Arena jumped the totals.

Mighty Montezuma Is the Play

It would be easy to write the Cougars completely off in this one after they played so poorly in their season opener, especially given how San Diego State is going to be in BYU’s face all game long with pressure defense.

And that’s just exactly what we’re going to do; Aztecs take this one 75-62.
