Richmond Spiders vs. Temple Owls

Tuesday, November 22, 2022 – 07:00 PM EST at Barclays Center

What You Should Know

The Richmond Spiders will look to end a three-game losing streak in the consolation bracket of the Empire Classic. Richmond lost its first game of the tournament to Syracuse, 74-71 in overtime, and will now take on Temple in the losers bracket.

In another close matchup, Temple lost to St. John’s, 78-72. The Owls are currently 2-3 but have a couple of excellent wins on their resume.

Teams Analysis

Richmond Spiders

Richmond is led by Tyler Burton, who has averaged 17.8 points per game. Burton and the Spiders have shot a 50.9% effective field goal percentage, nailing 33.3% from deep and 51.7% from inside.

Richmond loves to shoot threes and has also seen 13.8% of shots get blocked away. The Spiders are also turning the ball over 19.5% of the time. However, Richmond isn’t going to earn a ton of turnovers.

Temple Owls

Temple isn’t going to force many turnovers. The Owls also haven’t dominated on the defensive glass. However, they’ve held teams to a 49.5% effective field goal percentage, allowing teams to shoot just 27.8% from deep. Opponents have still scored 52.1% from inside the arc this season against Temple.

On the other hand, Temple has turned the ball over 20.3% of the time while shooting an effective field goal percentage of 49.3%. The Owls reach the line at a higher rate but shoot worse from the floor. Temple has nailed 32.8% from deep and 49.4% from inside the arc.

Damian Dunn has led the team with 21.4 points per game while shooting 94.6% from the foul line.

Game Prediction

The Spiders won’t force a high rate of turnovers. If Temple can keep the turnovers down and win the foul line battle, that would be beneficial. Richmond loves to shoot three-point balls but will likely struggle against a Temple team that has held teams to 27.8% from deep.

On the other hand, the Spiders have allowed teams to shoot a 43.3% effective field goal percentage, with opponents hitting under 25% from downtown. Let’s back the Under in this one for our NCAAB picks.

Syracuse Orange vs. St. John’s Red Storm

Tuesday, November 22, 2022 - 09:30 PM EST at Barclays Center

What You Should Know

It’s the battle of New York for the Empire Classic Championship. Syracuse knocked off Richmond in overtime, while St. John’s squeezed past Temple to begin the tournament.

The winner will take home the tournament championship trophy.

Teams Analysis

Syracuse Orange

Syracuse is led by Joseph Girard III, who has averaged 21.3 points per game. The offense has responded well to his leadership, shooting a 53.7% effective field goal percentage. The Orange have limited turnovers to 16.2% and have earned over 31% of offensive rebounds.

However, Syracuse rarely gets to the foul line. But with the lack of freebies, the Orange are shooting 39.1% from deep and 51.7% from inside the arc. They’ve also been blocked just 1.7% of the time this season.

St. John’s Red Storm

St. John’s has been very good defensively, holding teams to a 48% effective field goal percentage. The Red Storm are also aggressive defensively, earning 22.4 turnovers. They’ve held teams to just over 30% from downtown and have allowed teams to shoot over 50% from inside the arc.

On the flip side, the Red Storm are shooting an effective field goal percentage of 55%. They’ve nailed 35.3% from deep and 55.9% from inside the arc.

St. John’s rarely takes three-pointers. But against Syracuse’s zone, they’re going to have to. Syracuse has allowed teams to shoot 39% from downtown.

The Red Storm have rarely been getting to the line, but they’ll need to be more aggressive on the offensive glass, knowing that Syracuse has allowed 34.2% of offensive rebounds.

Game Prediction

It’s likely that St. John’s allows more turnovers and gets to the line fewer times. If the Red Storm can’t take advantage of Syracuse’s lack of three-point defense, it’s going to be hard to earn a victory.

The Red Storm have played well defensively this season, but other than not getting to the foul line much, Syracuse has been lights out offensively.

Following the best sportsbooks, back the Syracuse Orange at +3.
