Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks vs. Charlotte 49ers

Monday, December 20, 2021 – 7:00 PM EST at Dale F. Halton Arena

If you want action today, put .25 units at the MOST on this game. Do NOT go crazy. You guys know me, I'd much rather be betting on sides than totals in college basketball. But there's nothing appealing with today's sides.

Anyway, here's why I like the over...

The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks have lost games to Saint Joseph's, Temple, Campbell, Liberty, and UConn. Those are all teams in the top 175 in college basketball. Those are games UMES is supposed to lose. However, against lower-tier opponents, like Fordham and Lehigh, Maryland Eastern Shore won, scoring at least 75 in both of those games.

Yes, the Fordham game went into double overtime, but at least Maryland Eastern Shore kept the game close to get to that point. Personally, I don't think the Hawks are that bad offensively. They're turning the ball over just 17.4 percent of the time and hitting 34.9 percent of long-range shots. And Maryland Eastern Shore isn't afraid to take some of those long-range jumpers.

Ball movement isn't great and shot selection could be better, but Charlotte is allowing teams to shoot a 54.8 percent effective field goal percentage. On the perimeter, the 49ers are giving up 35.6 percent from long range and 55.6 percent from inside the arc. Charlotte has allowed 75 points per game this season the on defensive end.

Second chances will be hard to come by for both teams in this game, but both teams will be getting good looks. That's ultimately why the number is kind of low at 131. If this game gets a bit sloppy, both teams are shooting over 70 percent from the line with Charlotte shooting 78.6 percent from the line.

The 49ers are currently shooting an effective field goal percentage of 54.2 percent and also don't turn the ball over often. Again, offensive rebounds could be hard to come by, however, Charlotte is shooting 35.2 percent from long range and 55.1 percent from inside the arc.

Maryland Eastern Shore is allowing nearly 65 points per game this season but takes away St. Mary's MD, Clarks Summit, and Bryn Athyn, who are all non-D1 opponents, and things look a lot worse defensively.

The Hawks are allowing opponents to shoot 35.8 percent from long range and 51.7 percent from inside. Maryland Eastern Shore will always play small, so that gives them an opportunity to spread the floor while also giving Charlotte a big opportunity to offensive rebound, gain second chances and dominate inside, as they've done all year long.

Maryland Eastern Shore is shooting over 44 percent for the season. That’s a lot better than most will give them credit for. The offense can shoot and score and while they struggle inside, Charlotte struggles to defend inside in the first place. With a limited amount of turnovers from both teams in this game, I’d like to think we’ll see plenty of attempts and get some really good shots from both sides in this game. For our NCAAB pick, I’m taking over 131 (-110) here.
