The Georgetown Hoyas will welcome the Marquette Golden Eagles to the Capital One Arena hoping to hold off a Marquette team that seems to be right back on track.
Marquette Golden Eagles vs. Georgetown Hoyas
Friday, January 07, 2022 – 06:30 PM EST at Capital One Arena
The public is going to love Marquette tonight. After Marquette absolutely smashed Providence, 88-56, the Golden Eagles look like they’ve bounced back from a long losing streak of four games.
Marquette lost to UCLA, Xavier, Connecticut, and Creighton before that 32-point explosion of a win against Providence, at home.
That was a fun win for Marquette, but I’m not ready to state that they’re back just yet. Tonight’s game, on the road, against Georgetown, won’t be easy.
The Hoyas are shooting an effective field goal percentage of 51.4 percent as they’ve hit 39.2 percent from downtown this season. Inside, Georgetown has struggled a bit, only hitting 47.2 percent of shots, but overall, with the work that Georgetown is putting in on the glass, the offense should be sustainable tonight.
Georgetown is grabbing 34.1 percent offensive rebounds and getting to the line at an above-average rate. Ultimately, the offensive rebounding and second-chance opportunities will be the biggest key of the game for Georgetown.
On the other hand, Marquette is shooting an effective field goal percentage of 50.3 percent while knicking down just 32.2 percent of threes and 51.8 percent of shots inside the arc.
The Golden Eagles have not been getting lots of offensive rebounds, but in games like the one against Providence, the offensive rebounds weren’t needed as much as they shot over 50 percent from the field.
Georgetown doesn’t defend the three-point shot all that well, giving up 35.4 percent of threes this season. However, inside the arc, teams have shot just 47.1 percent, which is an area that Georgetown will have success in, tonight against Marquette.
Marquette is very connected offensively and is usually earning assists on their baskets. When shots are falling and the ball is moving, it’s extremely hard to beat Marquette. This is a team that can win against anyone, but also lose against anyone.
The Golden Eagles have beaten Illinois, West Virginia, Kansas State, and Providence and they’ve lost to St Bonaventure, Wisconsin, UCLA, Xavier, Connecticut, and Creighton. The strength of schedule has been wonderful, but it’s very hard to evaluate this team. If Georgetown is able to score quickly on Marquette, the Hoyas will stick around in this game.
Most teams are struggling to score early against the Golden Eagles but the Hoyas like to get early shots and that could be another factor for Georgetown winning this game.
With that, I’m going to look at Georgetown, at home, getting the two points for my NCAAB pick in this one. I’m not sold on Marquette just yet. They’re an inconsistent team that can be really good but also have games where they don’t perform. Georgetown should dominate the glass and that will dictate the game.
