San Francisco Dons vs. Loyola Chicago Ramblers

Thursday, January 06, 2022 – 02:00 PM EST at Lifetime Activities Center-Bruin Arena

Loyola Chicago hasn't played basketball in three weeks. So they decided to agree to take on the San Francisco Dons on a neutral court in a big mid-major game that will help both teams for March Madness and their resumes.

I get Loyola hasn't played in a while, but this team has been back and practicing at full health for over a week now. This team is conditioned and should be fine heading into this game. Again, they've practiced for over a week now.

Loyola has the top effective field goal percentage in the nation with 59.8 percent. This team can literally shoot lights out, hitting 41.8 percent from long range and 57.4 percent from inside the arc. They'll limit turnovers, and more than likely win the turnover battle, all while staying about even on the glass.

Defensively, the Ramblers have held opponents to 32.7 percent from long range and 45.2 percent from inside the arc. They've also been clutch on the defensive glass, allowing just 24.6 percent offensive rebounds.

On the other hand, San Francisco is really good. Make no mistake of it. However, turnovers are getting high with 22.1 percent per game. With Loyola forcing 20.9 percent turnovers on the season, turnovers could be a difference-maker in this game for the Ramblers.

Despite the turnovers, San Francisco can still shoot lights out, shooting 36.5 percent from deep and 56.8 percent from inside. Loyola limits foul slightly more than San Francisco and I would say Loyola is a deeper team, to begin with.

San Francisco will always try and play players with two fouls in the first half while Loyola won't and that's also because Loyola has more depth on its team. Both teams love to take long-range shots but only Loyola assists on most of those shots.

The Ramblers will more than likely get more open looks and just better ball movement all around in this game. San Francisco hasn’t played any team in the top 40 of college basketball, yet, the Dons are ranked 34th in the nation.

No wonder why they haven’t lost yet. The Dons haven’t played a single team that’s been “better” than them. Still, what San Francisco has done is impressive. It’s been a crazy turnaround for this team in the last couple of years.

But Loyola Chicago has already played Michigan State and Auburn and while both games were losses, the Ramblers hung around in those games throughout.

Prediction

To win this game, Loyola might have to work inside a bit more because San Francisco is really good at limiting three-point attempts, but all in all, Loyola is one of the top 20 teams when it comes to assists, so good ball movement will throw any defense off their game and get that team some quality looks. For our best bets, let’s take Loyola Chicago -145 on the money line for tonight’s game.
