Will Florida International rebound from two straight losses, a couple of weeks back, against a below .500 Old Dominion team? Which way to lean at the top-rated sportsbooks?

Old Dominion Monarchs vs. Florida International Golden Panthers

Thursday, December 30, 2021 – 07:00 PM EST at Ocean Bank Convocation Center

Florida International has lost two straight games to Eastern Michigan and Jacksonville State. That was two weeks ago. Now they'll take on an Old Dominion team that is currently just 5-8 on the season, at Florida International.

Florida International is usually known for three-point shooting, and while that's still a thing, you'd be impressed to know that FIU's defense has been a big reason for an 8-3 start on the season. The Panthers have held opponents to a 43.8% effective field goal percentage while earning nearly 20% steals per game.

Teams are shooting just 26.4% from long range and 46.6% from inside the arc against Florida International. On the other hand, Old Dominion has an effective field goal percentage of 44.3% on the year and has turned the ball over 19% of the time.

The Monarchs have been getting to the line at a high rate, and they'll need to do that plenty in tonight's game. Old Dominion is shooting just 28.7% from outside and 44.8% from inside the paint to start the season. At the foul line, the Monarchs are also below average, hitting just 68.6% of foul shots on the year.

Old Dominion is the opposite of Florida International. The Monarchs rarely shoot three-pointers and are scoring 57.1% of their points inside the arc. They're also gaining another 23.4% of points from the foul line.

The Monarchs are physical on the offensive glass and will earn a couple of second chances. But three-pointers are worth more than two-pointers. It's easy math.

Florida International is shooting a very high rate of three-point shots and has hit 32.8% of threes this season. At home, you'd expect that percentage to increase. Also, Florida International is shooting 50% from inside the arc and despite not being the best rebounding team on the offensive glass, should also get chances against an Old Dominion team that has struggled to keep opponents off the glass this season.

Opponents are grabbing nearly 31% offensive rebounds against the Monarchs. While Florida International only grabs about 25% offensive rebounds, that number could increase, especially on long misses from three-point range.

Another big difference between both teams is depth. Florida International dishes out 37.6% of bench minutes while Old Dominion only gets 25.7% of bench minutes. The average in college basketball is 31.5%. Florida International loves to run and keeps guys fresh throughout the game.

Therefore, considering the NCAAB odds, I like FIU as a -110 pick-em at home for our college basketball picks. With a two-week layoff, there is a little concern with how they start this game, but being at home, I'd like to believe FIU will be just fine. FIU is hitting 35.5% of threes at home and 31.1% of threes on the road.
