Northern Iowa Panthers vs. Wyoming Cowboys
Thursday, December 23, 2021 – 06:30 PM EST at Stan Sheriff Center
The Wyoming Cowboys will take on the Northern Iowa Panthers in Honolulu, HI, after both teams ended up losing their first games of the tournament.
Wyoming matches up well in this game. The Cowboys are shooting an effective field goal percentage of 53.7% while only turning the ball over 14% of the time. While the Cowboys are only shooting 31.7% from long range, Wyoming is very capable of hitting shots from beyond the arc.
Inside is where the Cowboys excel. Wyoming is shooting 57.7% from inside while Northern Iowa is allowing teams to shoot 53.3%. Even from long-range, Northern Iowa has struggled to defend, allowing opponents to shoot 36.2% from deep.
The Panthers won't earn many turnovers, averaging just 14.6%. So there's a good chance Wyoming is able to limit turnovers and get high-quality shots throughout the entire game.
The one area where Northern Iowa has done extremely well has been on the defensive glass. The Panthers are allowing opponents to grab just 17.3% offensive rebounds, which is first in the league. Northern Iowa also refrains from fouling and sending teams to the line.
However, what's odd is that the Panthers are absolutely terrible are getting second chances themselves, earning just 20.1% offensive rebounds. Northern Iowa is going up against a much harder defense in Wyoming. The Cowboys allow an effective field goal percentage of 44.1%, limiting opponents to 27.5% from long range.
What does Northern Iowa do a lot of? They shoot a ton of threes with under 50% of assists on their made baskets this season. Teams have also struggled to score inside against Wyoming, shooting 45.9%. On top of that, just like Northern Iowa, Wyoming has limited free throws for its opponents.
Basically, Northern Iowa is terrific at dominating the defensive glass, but in turn, Wyoming will be just fine against Northern Iowa on the defensive glass, knowing Northern Iowa rarely crashes.
Wyoming should shoot at a much higher percentage in this game as well. Northern Iowa is allowing teams to shoot a 53.7% effective field goal percentage and have struggled to defend threes and inside the paint, ranking around the 280-295 range in both categories in the league.
On the other hand, again, Wyoming really does a great job defending long-range shots and has been great inside the paint as well defending. The Cowboys have the height advantage and rarely use their bench. A lot of the time, they'll use top players with two fouls in the first half.
