Marshall Thundering Herd vs. Toledo Rockets

Tuesday, December 21, 2021 – 07:00 PM EST at Savage Arena

The Toledo Rockets will welcome the Marshall Thundering Herd to Savage Arena for tonight's game. Toledo is currently 7-3 on the season with losses to just Oakland, Michigan State, and Richmond. All three teams are above the top 125 in college basketball.

In the most recent game, against Richmond, Toledo lost by three points, on the road against a solid Richmond team. Now they'll be home against Marshall, a team that has lost two straight to Ohio and Northern Iowa. In those two games, Marshall lost by double digits in both. One was home and one was on the road.

The Marshall offense isn't bad inside. The Thundering Herd are scoring 55.7% of shots inside the arc on the season. However, from long-range, Marshall is shooting just 28.4% on the year. The Thundering Herd have an effective field goal percentage of 51% but turn the ball over 18.7% of the time.

Toledo isn't much of a threat when it comes to turnovers, but the Rockets have been able to limit offensive rebounds to 26.2%, which is nearly top 100 in college basketball. The Rockets have also been solid limiting fouls and keeping teams off the line.

On the other hand, Toledo is shooting an effective field goal percentage of just 48.5. It's worse than Marshall, however, the Rockets should win the glass and keep the ball away from Marshall by limiting turnovers well.

Toledo is shooting 32.2% from long range and 48.6% from inside the arc. These are average college basketball numbers, however, Marshall allows teams to shoot 35.5% from deep and 48.4% from inside the arc. Plus, Toledo dominates at the foul line, shooting 76.9% from the charity stripe.

The Rockets are earning 32.5% offensive rebounds and getting to the line at a higher rate than Marshall this season. Marshall has height on their team and defends well when it comes to blocks. But that height still hasn't worked out for rebounding purposes.

Neither team has a bench for the most part. Toledo is one of the teams that rarely will use a bench. Basically, if a player has two fouls in the first half, that's the only time you'll see a player off the bench.

This is going to be a fast-paced game with lots of scoring. Toledo has five players nearly averaging 30 minutes a game and has four of those five averaging double-figures.

For our college basketball picks, I like this price of -143… I was thinking closer to -300 for Toledo, at home. I think they can win by at least seven points. So we're rolling with that. It’s an official .5 unit play at one of BMR's top-rated sportsbooks.
