Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Texas A&M Aggies
Saturday, March 4, 2023 – 12:00 PM EST at Reed Arena
Alabama basketball is taking over the nation as Brandon Miller and company have rolled through the SEC all season long. Earlier this week, the Tide clinched the SEC regular season title with a gritty comeback victory against the Auburn Tigers in overtime.
Alabama won the conference title with a game to spare, but they still have to travel to College Station and play against Texas A&M.
The Aggies were the only team to remain competitive with Alabama for the conference title, and the title almost came down to this last game.
Between how the Aggies are playing and the fact that they are playing at home, an upset wouldn’t be shocking. However, Alabama has proven that they can win in any environment.
Will Alabama cover the spread? Here are some key details and picks for this game.
Betting Trends for Both Teams
Alabama has managed to win almost every game this year, and the Tide have only lost one conference game all season.
However, they have had some close calls in recent weeks. Two of the team’s last three games have made it to overtime, and the other performance was a one-possession victory. These victories are great, but a 1-4 record ATS for the Tide’s last five games is worrisome.
Aggies Shine Under Pressure
On the other side of this matchup, Texas A&M is 4-1 against the spread against NCAAB odds in recent games. This team is able to consistently shine against any opponent, and this will be a huge test for the Tide.
In terms of the total’s line, Alabama usually hits the over due to the offensive firepower they bring to every game. While Texas A&M is known for hitting the under, they hit the over more often when they are underdogs. However, Alabama usually hits the under on road games.
Alabama’s Star Power
If Alabama covers this spread, it will be due to the stardom of Brandon Miller, the best freshman in college basketball. Miller uses his length to disrupt shots, and he has the best handles of someone his size in college basketball.
He can take it to the paint, but he is just as lethal from distance. He is truly a matchup nightmare for almost every team in college hoops.
Not Just MIller
Still, Alabama doesn’t rely solely on him. Against Auburn, Jahvon Quinerly was the offensive catalyst for the second half. In previous games, it’s been Noah Clowney, Noah Gurley, Charles Bediako, and Kai Sears who have also shined. Alabama has a deep bench, and they don’t have a glaring weakness on the roster.
The Tide’s size and length are hard to score on. The perimeter shooting is hard to stop, and they have talented guards who can make smart decisions. If Alabama is on, no one can stop them.
Picks and Predictions
Alabama may have struggled in recent weeks, but they are still winning these games. They have completed multiple double-digit comebacks, and they have an offense that can get hot at any moment. With their transition ability and perimeter shooting, you can never count the Tide out.
I expect Alabama to win this game, but I don’t see them covering. Texas A&M has a great defense, and they play significantly better at home.
Aggies Should Cover and Score Points Too
Since coming to Alabama, Texas A&M is the only team Nate Oats has failed to beat. This should be the first time it happens, but I feel more comfortable with the A&M spread pick.
In terms of the total line, give me the over. Alabama’s offense dictates the pace, and they are more likely to hit the over when they are playing the way they have been in recent weeks. We could see overtime, and we could also see quick spurts of scoring that inflate the stat sheet.
This game will be fascinating, so keep an eye out for it on Saturday.
