Golden State Warriors
At 29-7, the Golden State Warriors currently have the best record in the NBA. The Warriors are impressive 12-4 on the road this season. They are 8-2 in their last 10 and have a point differential of +9.8 this season. Their most recent game was a 115-108 win over the Miami Heat on Monday night.
The Warriors are led by Steph Curry, whose excellent season has put him firmly back in the MVP conversation. Steph is averaging 27 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds per game while shooting 39.3% from 3 point range. Steph's movement without the ball is unparalleled and he is impossible for almost anyone to successfully defend. Steph Curry has great statistics, but more importantly, he's a joy to watch play basketball.
The Golden State Warriors have also been bolstered by the emergence of Jordan Poole this season. Jordan Poole is playing excellent basketball, averaging 18 points per game and filling in as the secondary playmaker option for the Warriors. Poole's excellent play has allowed the Warriors to still be effective on offense even when Curry is on the bench. The ability to stagger Curry and Poole is a major reason for the Warriors' success this season.
Draymond Green does so many things that do not show up in the box score. Draymond seems reinvigorated this year. His defense is back to the impressive level that he played during the Warriors championship run. Green has an excellent basketball IQ and he serves as a coach on the floor. Whether it be barking out technical instructions or just lifting the team's intensity, Draymond is the team’s heart and soul. Green's return to elite-level defensive play is another major reason for the Warriors' renewed success.
The Dallas Mavericks have had a rough start to the season, but they are currently 19-18 after winning four of their last five. Dallas had been hit by COVID pretty hard, but they are starting to get their team back to full strength. The Mavericks are also adjusted to life under new head coach Jason Kidd and learning to implement his style of offense.
This will be the Mavericks' third game with Luka Dončić back in the lineup. Dončić recently missed several games due to COVID but he is back. Luka leads the team with 25 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists per game. Dončić is an elite playmaker and the offense runs through him.
Kristaps Porziņģis is enjoying a bit of a resurgence. He is having a fine year, averaging 21 points and 8 rebounds per game. Porziņģis handled Luka’s absence well and stepped up in the role of primary playmaker for the Mavericks. Porziņģis is an excellent shotmaker who can score from post position, or from 3-point range. Porziņģis' versatile play caused the Mavericks to believe him to be the ideal teammate to Luka, but this is the first year where that vision has truly started to mesh.
The Mavericks are suffering from more bad luck this evening as, now even though Dončić is back, Porziņģis will miss tonight. This is illustrative of the Mavericks' inability to field their full roster this season, which is why they have often been the underdog by NBA odds.
Jalen Brunson is the Mavericks' 6th man. Brunson's ability to create good luck is important for the Mavericks' offense when Luka is on the bench. Brunson carried out the offense when Dončić was out. He has an impressive 18.3 PER (player efficiency rating). With Porziņģis missing tonight, Brunson will be an important part of the Mavericks offense. The Mavericks will need Brunson to have a big night if they want to keep this one close.
Jalen Brunson vs. Jordan Poole. In a game where the stars, Steph Curry and Luka Dončić, could be equally matched, the bench minutes will play an important role in determining the outcome. Jordan Poole and Jalen Brunson play similar roles to read the team's offense when the stars are on the bench. Whichever man has the more effective evening could determine who is the winner of this game.
If Poole is able to have a big night while limiting Brunson, the Warriors will win the crucial minutes when the stars are resting.
If Brunson wins the battle, the Mavericks could be poised for an upset.
While the Dallas Mavericks appear to be on an upswing, they've been doing it against inferior competition. Their most recent wins have been over a depleted Nuggets team, the terrible Thunder, the terrible Kings, and a completely depleted Trail Blazers squad. Now Dallas goes up against the best in the NBA.
I think they are going to realize how big the gap is between where they're at right now, and the top of the league. We get a chance to take advantage of Dallas while they're being overvalued. Lay the points. Take the Warriors at one of BMR's top-rated sportsbooks.
