Western Conference partners Phoenix and Dallas will collide on Thursday, with the Suns having one decided edge over the Mavericks rest. The first of two games will have Ernie, Charles, Shaq, and Kenny talking about professional basketball, specifically, Phoenix vs. Dallas.
Each club comes in sizzling, with the Suns on a four-game heater and having won 13 of 17 (11-5-1 ATS) and the Mavericks winners of 10 of 11 (7-3-1 ATS).
Phoenix Suns vs. Dallas Mavericks
Thursday, January 20, 2022 – 7:30 PM EST at American Airlines Center
Phoenix has not played since Monday when they sacked San Antonio behind 121-107 behind Devin Booker’s 48 points. Dallas faced Toronto on Wednesday and won 102-98 for a push. With that, the NBA odds at the top-rated sportsbooks have the Mavs at +2 for this anticipated contest.
Phoenix Is Hot in the Second Half of the Season
The Suns have the best record in the NBA (24-18-1 ATS) and unless Golden State returns to playing the kind of basketball they did to start the season, Monty Williams' squad could again be the No. 1 overall seed.
If you compare the general numbers of the Phoenix this year to last when breaking down their efficiency, it is very similar. This season the Suns are 4th in points scored per 100 possessions and in the same category on defense, 2nd for fewest allowed.
A year ago at the All-Star break, which had different timing because of the late start to the season, the Suns were in the Top 6 in both categories. Where can Williams' team improve? An obvious spot in three-point shooting. Phoenix is 5th in three-point accuracy, yet, is in the bottom third of the league in attempts and makes.
Maybe Williams and his squad would rather take what the defense gives, but if they exchanged three two points attempts for three’s, that’s about 3.3 more points a game on average, which could be the difference in not only winning certain contests but taking two possessions games in the final minutes and make them three possessions games, that are less stressful. Nit-picking, sure, but a possible greater advantage for this club.
Dallas Creators Are Creating Winner Basketball
The Mavericks (26-19, 22-21-2 ATS) blazing stretch has moved them up to 5th in the Western Conference. From here, the goal is trying to catch Memphis, who has played nearly as well as Dallas at 12-2 SU, trailing the Grizzlies by three in the loss column.
Though Luka Doncic is a superstar, he cannot do it alone as we’ve witnessed. Jason Kidd might not be everyone’s cup of tea as a head coach, yet, he’s altered Dallas for the positive to this point. It is a great deal of responsibility for Doncic to be the leading scorer and playmaker.
Though Jalen Brunson has scored and handed out his fair share of dimes, Kidd has him thinking about creating more with the ball and his assists are at a career-high of 5.7 per game, compared to 3.5 average in his prior years.
This has lightened the load on Doncic forced opposing teams to not be as focused on the Mavs star and generated a different look for the offense.
The other big change is the attention to detail on defense for Dallas, who has moved all the way to 4th in the Association in defensive efficiency. Being able to compete on that end of the floor makes the Mavericks better than an average club.
Suns vs. Mavericks Free Pick Prediction
Off their 48-minute hard-fought win over the Raptors, Dallas this season is 5-2 and 4-3 ATS with no rest, winning by 3.2 PPG. But we also note Phoenix is 7-1 SU with two days off and their margin of victory in those contests is 8.8 PPG.
Like most teams, when the Suns are rested, they are ready to go and this group is 11-1 ATS when playing six or fewer games in 14 days and as a road favorite, what about 15-2 SU, winning by 11.2 PPG. Invest in the Suns with your NBA picks as the Suns shine in Big D.
