The struggling Indiana Pacers host the Phoenix Suns in a battle of east versus west. The Pacers are in a bad spot and could be short one of their best players in this matchup with the western conference leaders from Phoenix. The Suns for their part continued to play at the regular season pace they set last season and will look to win back-to-back games after a few days off.

Phoenix Suns vs. Indiana Pacers

Suns Will Be Well Rested and Ready

The Suns have been off since Tuesday when they beat the Toronto Raptors in an empty arena due to health and safety protocols at the Scotia Bank Arena. That's good news for tonight as they take on the Indiana Pacers after two days off. On the season, Phoenix is 6-1 with two days rest. You'd have to look really hard to find a scenario where the Suns don't come out looking favorably which is why they come into tonight's game as -5.5-point road favorites at the NBA odds board.

This line is short in my opinion and anything under -6 is a great price for the Suns against this version of the Indiana Pacers. The Suns were blown out at home against the Heat on Saturday and then had to make the trip north to Toronto to take on the Raptors in a game that they won but didn't necessarily play well. The Raptors went into the fourth quarter with a lead but Phoenix did just enough to pull away when it mattered most.

Pacers Are Too Shorthanded to Compete

Indiana is in a weird place right now in the sense that they obviously want to move on from some of the key players on their current roster. Whenever that's the case, it becomes really difficult to cap a team because you can't really be sure of what their motivation is. Indiana is 2-8 in their last 10 games and things have been going bad for a while. The issue for them is the start on defense, where they've plummeted in recent weeks and now find themselves ranked 21st in defensive efficiency.

With an offense that can be very inconsistent, there's no way they can get away with this type of lackluster defense and still be competitive. Tonight against the Suns, they have the added problem that Phoenix can match up with them in terms of size while still also having the option of going small which will be a matchup problem for Indiana.

Add to this the fact that Malcolm Brogdon could miss the game due to problems with his Achilles and I just don't see how the Pacers can keep up here. The Suns have had issues of their own lately but now that they have most of their pieces back, I expect them to get back to playing their best basketball. As far as the total goes, the under 220.5 might be worth a look here, especially if Brodgon misses out. The Pacers play at a slow pace even when healthy but without Brogdon, they don't really have anyone on the roster that plays the point guard position well. That is one of many reasons my official NBA pick for today's game is the Suns.
