The Indiana Pacers face division rival Detroit tonight and they have one mission, get back to .500 and tell the front office to shove it after what they said to start the month.

Is Indiana going to win an NBA title anytime soon? It sure does not appear that way and in early December the front office made a public declaration that three of the top five scorers for the Pacers, Domantas Sabonis, Caris LeVert, and Myles Turner, were available as trade bait.

Though it’s hard to say with certainty, the Pacers’ team has reacted positively and is 3-2 and 3-1-1 ATS since the announcement and could be motivated to prove the higher-ups (in name only, not salary) they are wrong.

Detroit Pistons vs. Indiana Pacers

BetOnline and other top-rated sportsbooks have Indiana as a large 10-point home favorite after they lost to Milwaukee last evening. Even if the NBA odds were to fall 2.5-points, this would still be the biggest favorite the Pacers have been this season.

Detroit Is Also Involved in Trade Talks

The Pistons don’t own the market of valuable commodities that other NBA teams desire. Detroit is in the midst of another horrible season at 4-22, though they are a passable 12-14 ATS for those of us making NBA picks.

The top target is forward Jerami Grant, who has developed as an offensive player and at 27, could be a good addition to a playoff team wanting to improve or a club that is in the wild card area and looking to move up. Grant recently injured his thumb and is out six weeks, so Detroit can field offers and see what the haul could be to help them rebuild.

The Pistons need cornerstones to start the rebuild and by the time Cade Cunningham, Saddiq Bey, and possibly Frank Jackson are ready to truly point Detroit upward, Grant could be 30 and his value diminished.

Detroit is one of only two teams not averaging triple digits (99.7 PPG) and that makes sense as they are last in the league in shooting percentage. That is a function of lack of talent and a cohesive offense since the teams they have faced have allowed 107.4 PPG.

Indiana Has to Work Together

The Pacers' slow start was precipitated by injuries to Malcolm Brogdon, Caris LeVert, and Jeremy Lamb. That and having a new head coach in Rick Carlisle. It is somewhat understandable why management wants to break this group up, because as a group, even when T.J. Warren was healthy, they still never accomplished anything in the chase for a championship.

No matter, all that could happen in the coming weeks to the Indiana roster, and all the players can do is be prepared to give their collective best efforts. What does that mean?

Indiana (12-18, 15-14-1 ATS) is rated slightly above to slightly below average in nearly every important offensive category, and honestly should have a better record. On offense, it’s focusing on the details, working on proper spacing to have fewer contested shots, and being smarter about taking advantage of open lanes to the rim instead of settling for jump shots.

On defense, having greater intensity on every trip, not every third one. That is not necessarily an indictment on the team, rather on individual players, who lose focus and permit easy buckets.

Pistons vs. Pacers Free Pick Prediction

Though Milwaukee was limited in top players on the floor last night, they buried the Pacers with a 27-12 fourth quarter to win 114-99. That had to be a frustrating loss with the Bucks not having Giannis or Khris Middleton.

Detroit has dropped 12 in a row but has not lost three straight against the spread in this harsh period. The Pistons have failed to cover their last two and we’ll take them to cover somehow versus Indiana and move to 23-10 ATS after three or more consecutive losses.
