Brooklyn Nets vs. Philadelphia 76ers

Wednesday, January 25, 2023 – 07:30 PM EST at Wells Fargo Center

The Brooklyn Nets will head out on the road to take on the Philadelphia 76ers tonight.

The 76ers defeated the Nets earlier this year, in November, 115-106. The Nets had Kevin Durant in that game, but they won’t have him tonight. Durant will still require two more weeks of rehab and then could return.

However, Ben Simmons will be available for the Nets and his relationship with 76ers fans could be better. There will be lots of booing and toying around with emotions.

Now, can the Nets block out all the noise and earn an upset over the 76ers tonight? Here are our NBA picks and predictions for Wednesday’s NBA matchup between the Brooklyn Nets vs. Philadelphia 76ers.

Can the Nets Continue Two-Game Winning Streak?

The Nets might be without Durant, but they’ve been playing well recently. Brooklyn has won its last two games, with wins over the Utah Jazz and Golden State Warriors to finish a western road trip.

The Nets score 115.7 points per 100 possessions while shooting an effective field goal percentage of 58.4%. Turnovers can get high, especially against the 76ers, but offensive rebounds and foul shots are rare for the Nets.

Brooklyn has earned a league-worse 21.2% offensive rebounds and has only added a free throw rate of 19, which is 25th in the NBA.

Meanwhile, the 76ers have held opponents to 112.2 points per 100 possessions and continue to play well defensively. Teams are shooting an effective field goal percentage of 53.8%, and as I mentioned, the 76ers are very good at forcing turnovers, earning 15.6% this season.

Philadelphia does allow 27.5% of offensive rebounds and fouls at a high rate. But Brooklyn isn’t too aggressive in either area, which should help the 76ers get by defensively.

Nets' Defense Is Underrated

The 76ers are scoring 115.8 points per 100 possessions this season. They’ve also nailed a 55.7% effective field goal percentage. Philadelphia’s also notorious for getting to the foul line and will easily beat the Nets in that area in this game.

However, the 76ers have struggled on the offensive glass, just like the Nets have. Neither defense is excellent on the glass, so this should be an exciting matchup on the boards. It can go either way.

The Nets have held teams to 112.1 points per 100 possessions. They also lead the league in defensive effective field goal percentage, allowing a 51.7% effective field goal percentage this season.

The Nets won’t earn as many turnovers and, again, won’t get to the foul line as consistently, but the 76ers being weak on the offensive glass will help the defense.

Nets vs. 76ers: Game Prediction

Without Kevin Durant, it’s hard to trust the Brooklyn offense. The Nets added 120 against the Warriors and 117 against the Jazz, but they’ll face a 76ers defense that is top-ten in points per 100 possessions, effective field goal percentage, and turnover percentage.

In the areas where the Nets have struggled, the 76ers have struggled a little bit less. Philadelphia should be able to earn a bunch of turnovers and at least limit the Nets to some tough shots in this game. Plus, Brooklyn won’t be able to get a ton of freebies at the foul line or second chances on the glass.

The 76ers are more healthy and have the better offense right now. Philadelphia will get to the foul line more frequently, but they’ve also been weak on the offensive glass. The Nets will force a bunch of hard shots as they lead the league in effective field goal percentage on the defensive end.

Recently, the 76ers have been playing many different types of games. They finished off the Kings, 129-127, in a high-scoring game. But before that game, they beat the Portland Trail Blazers, 105-95, in a low-scoring game.

The Picks

This will be Philadelphia’s first game home after a long West Coast road trip. So, now we’ve got the Nets and 76ers coming off West Coast road trips. You’d have to imagine both teams are tired and won’t give great effort on the glass.

Therefore, I’m backing the Under 227. With limited second chances and plenty of foul shots, the defenses should be superior in this game. I also like the 76ers to squeeze by the Nets and clever the -6.
