The Washington Wizards will try to make it three in a row tonight as they play their second game in Texas when they take on the Spurs.

San Antonio snapped a six-game losing streak with their win over the Boston Celtics in their last game. Let’s break down the NBA odds to see if we can cash another ticket tonight.

Washington Wizards vs. San Antonio Spurs

Monday, November 29, 2021 – 08:30 PM EST at AT&T Center

Wizards Are a Much Improved Team

This is not the Wizards team that we’ve become accustomed to over the years. Wes Unseld Jr. took over from Scottie Brooks and has implemented a style of play that is very different from his predecessor. That should be music to Wizards fans ears considering the Brooks era was a lot of going nowhere fast. Under Unseld, this team has focused on defense and being more efficient in the halfcourt.

They currently rank 12th in the league in defensive ranking which is up from last season where they finished 19th and the year before they were dead last. They also played at the fastest pace in the league last season but Unseld has completely changed that as well. The Wizards are 23rd in pace and these significant changes are working wonders for this group.

They are 13-7 after 20 games which is a long way from where they were at this same time last year. They were 5-15 at this same point last year so we really are looking at a completely different team.

It’s why they come into this game as road favorites at -3.5 tonight. Last season, the Wizards were road favorites eight times last year and actually had a winning record of 4-3-1 against the spread (ATS). Of course, that’s a very small sample size which applies to this season where they are 1-3. The Spurs for their part are 9-9 ATS on the season and as home dogs, they are 3-3 against the number.

Spurs Are a Team in Transition

San Antonio is not a playoff team and probably won’t be for a while. They’re a rebuilding team which is why they have a 5-13 record on the season. They managed to snap a six-game losing streak by beating the Celtics on Friday night. They will have a slight rest advantage here but I’m laying points with the Wizards because of the matchup. For the most part, the Spurs are a small ball team. The bigs that they do have are not a threat offensively.

The Wizards’ best small-ball lineup is so much better than the Spurs’ that I think the Wizards not only win this game, they will do it by a margin.

The Pick

There are two distinct advantages that the Wizards have in this spot; getting to the line and rebounding. Washington is 4th in the league in terms of free throw rate while the Spurs are the league’s worst team at getting to the line.

The second is rebounding where Washington has a clear advantage. They are 7th in rebounding compared to the Spurs who rank 25th in that category. While the Spurs’ win against the Celtics was impressive, it was the exception, not the rule.

They have been consistently bad for most of the season and the Wizards have the squad to get the job done here for today’s NBA pick.
