Charlotte Hornets vs. Orlando Magic

Friday, October 28, 2022 – 07:00 PM EDT at Amway Center

Teams Analysis

The Charlotte Hornets are coming off an overtime loss to a solid New York Knicks team on the road and are 2-2 on the season. Meanwhile, the Magic are 0-5 and already considering tanking after earning last year’s number-one overall pick, Paolo Banchero.

Even at home, the Magic will have a tough time in tonight’s matchup. The Hornets score 119.5 points per 100 possessions while shooting an effective field goal percentage of 56.6%. Charlotte is currently top-five in both of those categories.

The offense has also turned the ball over just 13.3% of the time while earning over 30% of offensive rebounds. We won’t see Charlotte on the foul line all that much, but they’ll absolutely limit turnovers, earn offensive rebounds and ultimately get good looks from the field. Gordon Hayward leads the Hornets with 19.8 points per game.

Meanwhile, the Magic have allowed 113.9 points per 100 possessions. They’ve also turned the ball over just 13.1% of the time defensively and have given up 29.5% of offensive rebounds. That’s not going to get the job done against Charlotte.

On the other hand, the Magic score 105.3 points per 100 possessions while shooting an effective field goal percentage of 50%. Those two numbers are in the bottom five in the league.

The Moneyline Pick

Orlando could find their way to the foul line in this game, but ultimately, they’ve been taking poor looks from the field and haven’t dominated the offensive glass to earn second chances.

I’ll take the top-five Hornets offense over the bottom-five Magic offense.

Indiana Pacers vs. Washington Wizards

Friday, October 28, 2022 - 07:30 PM EDT at Capital One Arena

Teams Analysis

The Indiana Pacers have lost 4 of their first 5 games to start the season. Like the Magic, they’re in tank mode already. The defense has allowed at least 114 points in every game this season. Even in Indiana’s win over Detroit, they allowed 115 points in a 124-115 win. However, the bookmakers are adjusting.

Washington’s defense has been tremendous to begin the year. The Wizards have allowed 106.6 points per 100 possessions and a 47.6% effective field goal percentage on the defensive end.

The Pacers have scored 113.6 points per 100 possessions while shooting a 51.8% effective field goal percentage. Washington should be able to get plenty of stops defensively.

Indiana has had success on the offensive glass and could earn second chances, but the Pacers aren’t getting to the foul line at a high rate. Meanwhile, Washington isn’t getting to the foul line much, either. They’ve also been weak on the offensive glass and turn the ball over 16.2% of the time, which is the 4th worst in the NBA.

The Total Pick

The Wizards will get better looks from the field. That’ll pace them, but with neither team getting to the line at a high rate and Washington’s defense playing at a top-tier level, I’ll take the Under in this game for my NBA picks.

Houston Rockets vs. Portland Trail Blazers

Friday, October 28, 2022 - 10:00 PM EDT at Moda Center

Teams Analysis

The Houston Rockets are currently 1-4 on the season. They’re now heading to Portland to take on a 4-1 Trail Blazers team that has impressed early on.

The Rockets are scoring 106.1 points per 100 possessions. They’ve also shot a 48.5% effective field goal percentage. Both of those numbers are bottom 3 in the NBA. The only thing Houston does well is an offensive rebound.

However, the Blazers have limited teams to 25.6% offensive rebounds and should be able to keep Houston’s offensive rebounding numbers lower than its average. Meanwhile, led by Damian Lillard, the Blazers have scored 113.9 points per 100 possessions. Lillard has scored an average of 31 points per game on 49.5% from the field.

The Blazers have the highest free throw rate in the league. Houston could limit Portland from the line, but they won’t limit Portland on the offensive glass.

The Rockets have also allowed an effective field goal percentage of 55.9% from the field defensively.

The Spread Pick

I’ll bet on the team consistently winning over the team consistently losing.
