The Memphis Grizzlies (8-8) will battle with the Utah Jazz (11-5) this Monday evening. This is the first meeting between the teams since their first-round playoff series last May, which the Jazz won in five games after dropping Game 1 at home. This season, the Jazz are 6-2 at home while the Grizzlies are 2-5 on the road. Let’s see the NBA odds.

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Utah Jazz

Monday, November 22, 2021 – 09:00 PM EST at Vivint Arena

The Jazz (10-6 ATS) are a 10-point favorite over the Grizzlies (9-7 ATS) at BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks. Utah is on a three-game winning streak with each win by at least 16 points. Memphis must quickly put behind it the team’s worst game of the season after losing 138-95 to the Timberwolves on Saturday.

Memphis: Where’s the Defense?

Statistically, the Grizzlies are the worst team with a non-losing record in the NBA right now. Their Net Rating is -5.4, which ranks 25th and is the best ranking for any team at or above .500. The main problem has been a defense that ranks dead last in Defensive Rating (113.8) and points per game allowed. Memphis is the only defense allowing opponents to shoot over 40% from three this season. Memphis just allowed Minnesota to make 20 threes on Saturday in that blowout loss that was over before halftime.

This is bad news against a Utah team that ranks No. 1 in Offensive Rating (114.3) and takes a league-high 48.7% of its shots from three. The only good news is that the Jazz has not been as efficient from three this season, ranked 19th in 3P% (34.0%). However, they are on a roll right now. The Jazz has four games this season where they shot over 40% from three and three of those games are their last three (all wins). Memphis is 2-6 when allowing at least 15 threes in a game.

The Jazz also ranks first in rebound percentage (53.7%), though that is not a sore spot for Memphis, which ranks ninth (51.1%) this season. Utah is 0-3 when losing the rebound battle by more than one board this season, but obviously, that has only happened three times in 16 games. Memphis is only 3-3 when winning the rebound battle by at least eight. Memphis is also 3-8 when allowing more than 108 points this season. Utah is 11-1 when scoring more than 105 points.

Mitchell vs. Morant

Memphis has stayed at .500 thanks to the play of third-year point guard Ja Morant, who is averaging a career-best 25.1 points per game. He is shooting 49.7% from the field after 44.9% last season. The Grizzlies tend to go as his shot goes. Memphis is 7-2 this season when he shoots at least 50% from the field compared to 1-6 when he is under 50%. Memphis is 6-3 when he scores at least 26 points compared to 2-5 when he is under 26 points.

Compare that with Utah’s star Donovan Mitchell. The Jazz is 4-0 this season when he doesn’t score more than 20 points, and they also won the fifth game in Atlanta by 18 points with Mitchell inactive. Utah is even 4-2 when Mitchell shoots under 42% from the field. The Jazz just has more players to contribute around their star than Memphis does right now.

Memphis has been short-handed as second-leading scorer Dillon Brooks has only played four games this season. He recently returned to the lineup and started three games in a row, but he was out for the Minnesota debacle where the Grizzlies fell behind 72-43 at halftime. Brooks is doubtful for this game.

Few teams lose as ugly as the Grizzlies this season. Seven of the team’s eight losses have been by double digits. Utah is 5-1 ATS in conference play this season. The Jazz is also kings of the double-digit win in the NBA. Nine of their 11 wins this season have been by at least a dozen points, and they lead the NBA since last season with 48 double-digit wins, 11 more than the next-closest team (Clippers). I am going to trust the Jazz to cover in their building for your NBA picks this Monday.
