The Los Angeles Lakers are just 21-21 on the year and it’s becoming apparent that maybe the Lakers aren’t as good as many thought to begin the year. Let’s break down the NBA odds for this game.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Denver Nuggets

Saturday, January 15, 2022 – 9:00 PM EST at Ball Arena

Sure, Anthony Davis isn’t around right now, but overall, the Lakers are struggling. It seems like LeBron James is doing everything he can to make this team successful, but the entire team has struggled to execute around him.

Meanwhile, his other star player on the floor, teammate Russell Westbrook has really struggled from the floor and continues to be a turnover machine while making bad passes. But despite all of this, the Lakers are just +3.5 point underdogs against the Nuggets, on the road.

The Los Angeles Lakers are scoring just 109.4 points per 100 possessions this season, which is 23rd in the NBA. This is a poor rate, despite shooting an effective field goal percentage of 53.6 percent on the season.

The points are low while the quality of shots is high. This is because the Lakers are 21st in turnover percentage, 22nd in offensive rebound percentage, and 18th in free throw rate on the offensive end. It’s the mental errors and the lack of hustle that’s keeping the Lakers from scoring points at a consistent and high rate.

Meanwhile, the Denver Nuggets are holding opponents to the same exact number, 109.4 points per 100 possessions. The Nuggets aren’t great at limiting good shots, because the Nuggets are capable of dominating the defensive glass.

So the Lakers have an off-shooting night, the Nuggets will clean up the glass and ensure that there are minimal second chances for the Lakers in this game. The Lakers are also just as bad on the defensive end.

Los Angeles is allowing 111 points per 100 possessions while allowing teams to shoot an effective field goal percentage of 52.7 percent. The Nuggets are kind of the same offense as the Lakers, however.

The Nuggets shoot a high effective field goal percentage but struggle to limit turnovers and offensive rebounds. The Nuggets are also one of the worst teams in the league when it comes to getting to the line.

I wouldn’t trust either one of these teams on the offensive end. If both teams have great shooting nights, then we’ll tip the cap and move on. However, both teams, despite shooting quality shots, have turned the ball over at a high rate while struggling to offensive rebound.

These teams have also rarely seen the line this year and are scoring a below-average amount of points per 100 possessions this season. With the total sitting at 224.5, I’ll gladly take the under for my NBA pick against two teams that really don’t show much care on the offensive end of the floor.
