New York Knicks vs. Indiana Pacers

Wednesday, November 03, 2021 – 07:00 PM EDT at Gainbridge Fieldhouse

New York Knicks

The New York Knicks are off to a 5-2 start that has their fan base excited. They are led by Julius Randle who is averaging 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists per game.

New York made a dramatic turnaround in identity since last season when they were a low-scoring team with an elite defense. They now have upped their pace and point output and now average 115.1 points per game, which is second in the NBA. Opponents are averaging 110.3 points per game against the Knicks.

While Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau isn't happy about the number of points his team is giving up, he has to be happy with the winning results. New York is coming off a loss on Monday night at home against the Toronto Raptors.

In the postgame press conferences, the Knicks all talked about being outplayed and outworked, so we can expect them to come back with increased attention to detail on their effort level and intensity.

The Knicks made the leap to a playoff team last year by being a hard-working, scrappy, defensive team. So while the new scoring is definitely a boost, they must be careful not to lose their identity. Losses like Monday night against Toronto should help remind the Knicks of the team that they are meant to be.

Indiana Pacers

The Pacers had their best performance of the season on Monday night beating the Spurs 131-118. This improved their record to 2-6. Indiana is struggling with injuries right now but cannot afford to dig too deep a hole in an Eastern Conference, which has recently improved its depth at the bottom of the playoff pecking order.

The Pacers are led by Domantas Sabonis who averages 24 points and 13 rebounds per game. TJ McConnell leads the team in assists averaging 10 per game. They are 9th in the league in scoring but 27th in points against.

Indiana is going to need to improve their effort on the defensive end if they want to turn their season around and make a playoff push. The Pacers also need to take better care of the ball. They are 28th in the league in turnovers averaging 16.5 per game.

The Pacers were excited by the return of Caris LeVert. He scored 16 points with 7 assists and 2 rebounds in his return. Staying true to the theme of the Pacers' inability to stay healthy, however, point guard Malcolm Brogdon missed the game.

They have a fantastic starting 5 in Malcolm Brogdon, Caris LeVert, TJ Warren, Domantas Sabonis, and Myles Turner. Yet one has to wonder how many games they will play together this season. While Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle tries to manage his way through this mess, the Pacers have to hope for some good fortune in the injury department in order to make a push.

Key Matchup

Julius Randle vs Domantas Sabonis. Both teams are led by dominant, versatile, big men who can do it all. Both Sabonis and Randle are adept at creating looks for themselves and their teammates and grabbing important rebounds.

While this game should feature some very fun play on the perimeter by talented playmakers, the end result will be determined by who can be more efficient in this matchup.

The Knicks will need Randle to do it all, especially score efficiently. The Pacers will once again need Sabonis to put up big scoring numbers to create a winning streak. While neither man is known for their defense, they will certainly be checking each other at key points of the game. This matchup will most likely determine the winner of the game.

Best Bet

The Pacers might have a more talented roster yet I believe the Knicks are the better team. They have more continuity within their system, they have more established roles, and they do not have players darting in and out of the lineup each night.

The Knicks play a hard-nosed brand of basketball that the Pacers want to emulate. I do not believe the Pacers are there yet, making the Knicks the best bet on the board tonight at one of BMR's best sportsbooks.
