The Nets and the Heat are two of the best teams in the NBA Eastern Conference. Who will emerge victorious when they face off and which team is the right pick against NBA odds?

Miami Heat vs. Brooklyn Nets

Wednesday, October 27, 2021 – 7:30 PM EDT at Barclay Center

Miami Heat

The Heat suffered a disappointing first-round sweep in the playoffs last season to the Milwaukee Bucks. The Heat reacted this offseason by adding PJ Tucker and Kyle Lowry. This made an already fearsome Heat defense even more formidable.

So far this has proved to be true. The Heat only allow an average of 95.7 points per game to opponents. The Heat have prevented their first three opponents from shooting over 30% from 3. The Nets will definitely test this defense, but the Heat should be up for this challenge.

Jimmy Butler is the team leader of the Heat and right now he's averaging 25.3 points per game on 52.8% shooting from the field. Bam Adebayo is also off to an impressive start averaging 17.7 points and 14 rebounds per game. Tyler Herro is making a case for 6th Man of the Year and Most Improved Player. He's averaging 23.3 points per game. That is an improvement of 8 points per game above his average from last season.

Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra runs a disciplined regime. His team is always considered to be one of the best-conditioned teams in the NBA. This could come in handy against the Brooklyn Nets team that seems like they are playing their way into shape and form this season.

Brooklyn Nets

The Nets started off this season 2-2. They opened the season by getting blown out in Milwaukee. They then went to Philadelphia and got a win by playing strong in the clutch in a game where they were behind for most of the regulation time. They appeared to be in control against the Charlotte Hornets, yet succumbed to a late Charlotte comeback. No such problem emerged against the Wizards. They got out to an early lead and never relinquished it, cruising to a 14 point victory.

Kevin Durant is making his case for MVP by averaging 31 points per game. Patty Mills has proven to be an exceptional pick-up for Brooklyn. Mills is averaging 17.3 points per game. He has been a sharpshooter shooting 64% on three-pointers. James Harden is off to a slow start, only. averaging 17.3 points per game as he adjusts to the new rules that send him to the free throw line less often.

LaMarcus Aldridge has been good in relief averaging 11 points per game off the bench. Joe Harris is struggling to find his three-point shooting form from last season where he averaged over 40% from behind the arc. This season he's down to 34%. The Nets are hoping he gains the shooting stroke and does it soon.

Key Matchup

Kyle Lowry vs James Harden. While they will not always check each other, Lowry should draw a bulk of the assignments against Harden. The key to beating the Nets has been reducing them to being a one-man attack on offense. Harden has not been his usual MVP-caliber self this season and Lowry will try to extend that slump for at least one more game.

It is proven that against the elite teams a single player cannot simply will his team to victory. Durant will definitely need help from Harden if they are to pull off a victory against one of the NBA's top defenses. If Lowry can help continue Harden’s struggles, the Heat will cover the spread and have a great chance to win. If Harden finally breaks through, this Nets offense will be potent as it was at the end of last season and the Nets will cover the game in a victory.

Best Bet

While Brooklyn is starting to find their form, I still think this is going to be a tough matchup against an elite defense. Brooklyn will continue to improve their on-court chemistry and tighten up their rotations. However, at this point, the Heat have more continuity and a much deeper bench. Miami coach Erik Spoelstra has the players’ expectations and roles much more clearly defined and this cohesion will lead the Heat to be able to cover against NBA odds. Take the points. Take the Heat for your NBA picks.
