Memphis Grizzlies vs. Minnesota Timberwolves

Friday, April 29, 2022 – 09:00 PM EDT at Target Center

Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies have been the comeback kids during the series. The Minnesota Timberwolves have amassed many double-digit leads against the Grizzlies, but the Grizzlies keep fighting.

In Game 3, the Grizzlies overcame not one, but two, 25-point leads by the Timberwolves to come back for the victory. In Game 5, the Timberwolves were ahead by 13 points in the fourth quarter and the Grizzlies still managed to get the victory.

Ja Morant has been electric for the Grizzlies, and his dunk in the second half of Game 5 was the highlight of the playoffs so far. To cap off a great night, Morant took advantage of Anthony Edwards' aggressive nature on an inbound play in order to score the winning basket to seal the win in Game 5. Overall this has been an exciting series, featuring two young teams who are making mistakes but learning from them.

The amount of talent on the court has been fun to watch, even if some of the decisions have been puzzling. Sometimes we scratch our heads, sometimes we jump for joy, but this has been the most exciting first-round playoff series this season.

Minnesota Timberwolves

This series has featured Anthony Edwards ascending to become the team leader of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Karl-Anthony Towns, who himself was also a first overall pick, has had to cede the leadership of the team to the young, brash Edwards. With that in mind let's review our NBA odds

Edwards' confidence and swagger have allowed him to make the most of his opportunity to shine here in the playoffs. Edwards has one of the quickest first steps in the league, has all the potential to be a top defender, and has the confidence befitting of an NBA superstar. Karl-Anthony Towns has struggled with the leadership role but being the number 2 option behind Edwards is the future of this team.

Edwards has the body language of a champion; Towns' body language can betray him sometimes. Towns often whine and you can frequently hear him complaining about the court-side microphones. Towns allow bad calls by the referees to get him rattled and he can be easily frustrated.

At the same time, Edwards has been cool, calm, and collected under pressure. Towns is a great talent but Edwards is a great leader. Once the Timberwolves figure this dynamic out they will be even more dangerous in the future. We must remember that this is the Timberwolves' first playoff series with this core, and it will be a great learning experience for this team.

Key Matchup

Anthony Edwards vs. Ja Morant

This series has displayed that in order for the Timberwolves to make their next step in developing their basketball team they will need to turn the leadership role and primary scoring option over to Anthony Edwards. Ja Morant is already the unquestioned number one on his team and these two men will be dueling once again.

Anthony Edwards has been defending Ja Morant, meaning not only is he carrying the workload on offense, but he is also tasked with stopping the opponent's most dynamic player. Edwards has all the tools to be a great defender but he is still learning and he makes mistakes due to his own inexperience.

An example was on Ja Morant's game-winning basket, instead of playing Morant straight up, Edwards went for the steal, allowing Morant free reign to attack the rim. Edwards will learn from mistakes such as these, especially against players of Morant's caliber.

If Anthony Edwards is able to have a big night and keep Morant in check, the Timberwolves have a great chance to force Game 7. If Ja Morant is able to have an explosive night once again, the Grizzlies could end the series tonight.

Best Bets

There are two ways to approach this game. The first is by looking at the under. Three of the five games have gone under in the series so far. With the total set so high, all it takes is one lull in scoring for the game to go under.

Both these teams are wildly inconsistent and have been prone to scoreless periods. We will continue to see that trend tonight. Our first best bet for tonight's game is Under 229.

The second way to look at this game is through the side. I like the Memphis Grizzlies to end this series this evening. I trust Memphis much more as a team. As exciting a story as the Timberwolves have been, I don't trust them to come through in the clutch.

The Grizzlies are an excellent basketball team. The Timberwolves are great, but they are equally inconsistent and prone to terrible stretches. With the pressure on, we will most likely see another Timberwolves implosion tonight. Our second best bet for today is the Memphis Grizzlies -1.
