Memphis Grizzlies vs. Los Angeles Lakers

Sunday, January 9, 2022 – 9:30 PM EST at Arena

The Memphis Grizzlies have been a solid surprise this season. At 27-14, Memphis fans literally have something to cheer for. A win against the Lakers, on the road, would make things even better. Memphis hasn’t lost a game in January, going 4-0, and are on an eight-game winning streak dating back to December. Not only is Memphis winning, but they’re winning by scoring lots of points. The Grizzlies are playing back-to-back after beating the Clippers last night.

Meanwhile, the Lakers got one night of rest before this game. The Lakers, like the Grizzlies, haven’t lost in January. However, Los Angeles’ most recent loss came against Memphis, back on December 29, where Memphis won 104-99, with the Lakers on the road. The Grizzlies are scoring 112.8 points per 100 possessions this season.

Memphis isn’t taking the best shots, but the Grizzlies have been dominant on the offensive glass. The Grizzlies are shooting a 51.8 percent effective field goal percentage but are first in the league in offensive rebounds with 31.6 percent. Memphis is also top 10 in limiting turnovers in the NBA, which has helped the Grizzlies score lots of points in each game they’ve played.

The Lakers have been terrible on the defensive glass this year, allowing 27.3 percent offensive rebounds, so there’s a good chance that Memphis can get a whole lot of second chances in this game. Plus, the Lakers specialize in forcing turnovers on defense. If Memphis limits that, the Lakers won’t be looking too solid on the defensive end.

On the other hand, the Lakers haven’t been exciting on the offensive end either. The offense is scoring just 109 points per 100 possessions as they’ve struggled to limit turnovers and earn offensive rebounds. Los Angeles will take quality shots but after the first shot goes up, it’s anyone’s guess as to what happens next. Memphis has limited opponents to 109.3 points per 100 possessions and while teams are shooting an effective field goal percentage of 52.9 percent, opponents are also turning the ball over 15.6 percent of the time against Memphis.

Plus, the Lakers aren’t a threat on the offensive glass like other teams Memphis has played recently.

With Desmond Bane and the Memphis Grizzlies stepping up in the last month or so, I’ll take Memphis to cover the three-point spread in this game. I’m not sold on the Lakers and to be fair, every game, especially at home, the Lakers are heavily taxed. Both teams are currently red hot but the Grizzlies are just a little bit more consistent. I’ll ride Memphis in tonight’s western conference showdown. It should really be an exciting game between two teams that continue to impress as of late. Neither team has lost in January, but that’s about to change tonight!
