The Phoenix Suns (20-4) are back in action this Friday evening on ESPN as they host the Boston Celtics (13-13). This is the second unusual week in a row where the Suns are playing games on Friday and Monday while having rest days in between. This is only Phoenix’s second game since the Warriors snapped its 18-game winning streak last Friday. But what about the NBA odds?

Boston Celtics vs. Phoenix Suns

Friday, December 10, 2021 – 10:00 PM EST at Footprint Center

The Suns (12-12 ATS) are a 5.5-point favorite over the Celtics (13-12-1 ATS) at BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks. Phoenix won 108-104 against the Spurs on Monday. The Celtics are 1-3 on this current road trip, but can they end it with an upset win?

Celtics: Bad Road Team vs. Great Home Team

The Celtics tried to shake off a terrible second quarter on Wednesday night against the Clippers to make the final look respectable, but the 114-111 loss was a bad one given that Paul George was a surprise inactive.

Boston only shot 31.3% from three and had its second-most turnovers (22) in a game this season. Jayson Tatum was solid again with 29 points, but the Celtics continued to struggle without Jaylen Brown, who has a hamstring injury and has missed half the season. Brown has been ruled out again for this game.

While the Suns have a lot of glowing statistics, there is little that Boston does exceptionally well this season. The Celtics are 21st in FG%, 22nd in 3P%, 10th in rebound percentage, 18th in offensive rating, and 9th in defensive rating. Hence, a 13-13 team that is currently 10th in the Eastern Conference.

Boston draws a tough matchup with a Phoenix team that has the second-best FG% on offense and the fourth-best FG% on defense this season. Phoenix has shot a higher FG% than its opponent in 19 out of 24 games this season. When the Celtics shoot a worse FG% than their opponent, they are 0-10 with 8 losses by at least 7 points.

Suns: Devin Booker’s Impact

While the Celtics are without a key player, the Suns are facing a bigger loss with guard Devin Booker still not ready to return to action after resting his hamstring strain. Booker left the first matchup with Golden State last week, which the Suns were still able to win. But when the rematch came in Golden State last Friday, the Suns were no match in a 22-point loss that snapped their franchise-record 18-game winning streak.

In hosting a lesser San Antonio team on Monday, the Suns struggled in a tight one but still won 108-104 thanks to Chris Paul’s late baskets. Paul led the team with 21 points and Phoenix is 10-0 this season when he scores at least 16 points.

Even without Booker, the Suns still have a great roster intact from last year’s NBA Finals. But Landry Shamet has been a big drop-off from Booker in the starting lineup the last three games. The Suns are 7-1 and a plus-33 with Shamet on the court in the games where he’s played at least 20 minutes this season.

However, he is only shooting 35.7% from the field despite making 57.1% of his threes (8-of-14) and averaging 11.3 points per game. Booker scored at least 12 points in every game this season except for the Warriors game he left injured after 15 minutes.

Since the Suns have not played since Monday, head coach Monty Williams made the rare decision of not practicing on Tuesday and Wednesday. The team should be well-rested for this matchup. Since 2020, the Suns are only 7-12 ATS when getting two or three days of rest.

Despite the 20-4 record, the Suns are tied for the second-most wins by 1-to-5 points this season (six). Not everything has come easy, but the fact is this team’s only loss in the last 20 games was a blowout in Golden State without Booker.

No Booker here, but I like the Suns to cover at home for your NBA picks this Friday night.
