The Boston Celtics (13-12) will meet the Los Angeles Clippers (13-12) this Wednesday evening with the teams having the same record. The Celtics just lost in Los Angeles last night, 117-102, against the Lakers. The Clippers won in Portland on Monday and are starting a three-game homestand. But what about the NBA odds?

Boston Celtics vs. Los Angeles Clippers

Wednesday, December 08, 2021 – 10:30 PM EST at Staples Center

The Clippers (11-14 ATS) are a 3-point favorite over Boston (13-11-1 ATS) at BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks. The Clippers have had one winning streak all season and that was a seven-game surge to begin November. Can they string two together here?

Celtics: About Last Night

The Celtics are 1-2 on their current road trip. After scoring 130 points in Utah and a season-high 145 points in Portland, the Celtics lost 117-102 to the Lakers last night. It was a cool-down night (43.9% from the field and 30.3% from three) after the Celtics had their two best shooting games of the season over the weekend. Boston even missed nine free throws.

The offense has been mediocre this season and that is a concern against a Clippers defense that still ranks 3rd in defensive rating.

The Celtics usually go as their star Jayson Tatum goes, but despite 34 points from Tatum, no other Boston player scored more than 13 points against the Lakers. Boston is now 8-5 when Tatum scores more than 25 points this season. He has gone over 30 points in three straight games but did not get enough help last night.

Boston was without Jaylen Brown (hamstring) for the third game in a row. While the team is hopeful it can get their second-leading scorer back soon, it may not work out in time for this game. Boston actually has a better record without Brown (7-5) in the lineup than it does with Brown (6-7) this season, but statistically, the Celtics are plus-5.7 points better with Brown on the court.

The Celtics were crushed 51-34 on the boards by the Lakers, though Boston is usually better at rebounding than that, and slightly better on the season than the Clippers. LeBron James picked apart the Celtics with 30 points on 13-of-19 shooting. Paul George will need to have a good game for the Clippers to win this one.

The Clippers are only 6-9 ATS as a home favorite this season. Boston is 4-3-1 ATS as a road underdog this season. The Celtics are only 7-8 on the road, but six of their nine double-digit wins have come on the road. That is how Boston ranks No. 8 in net rating (+2.4) in road games despite the 7-8 road record.

Clippers: Which Paul George Shows Up?

Paul George is having one of his better seasons in taking over as the alpha with Kawhi Leonard (ACL) out. But his recent play has not been up to par. In his first 17 games this season, George was averaging 26.4 points and shooting 34.9% from three. But in the last seven games, George is only averaging 21.4 points and shooting an abysmal 22.4% from three.

He is 3-of-17 from three in the last three games, but Luke Kennard has stepped up to hit 10-of-20 threes in that time. Kennard made his first start of the season in Portland on Monday as the Clippers continue to struggle with injuries to the lineup.

Another key player to the last three games has been Marcus Morris, who missed 16 of the team’s first 25 games. But over the last three games, he is scoring 19.7 points per game to give the team another scoring threat beyond George and Reggie Jackson like it’s been most of the season.

The Clippers have only outshot their opponent in 13 of 25 games (52.0%) this season. Last season, they had the higher FG% in 62.5% of their games as one of the best shooting teams in modern NBA history.

The Celtics are 3-1-1 ATS when playing with no rest this season. The Celtics are also 6-2 ATS in non-conference games compared to 1-4 ATS for the Clippers. Both teams have been inconsistent and mediocre this season.

I am going to go with the Celtics to bounce back (in the same venue) from last night, give Tatum more help, and get this cover for your NBA picks.
