 Boston Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls

Wednesday, April 06, 2022 – 08:00 PM EDT at United Center

Defense Wins Championships

This season Boston has been one of the most impressive defenses in the NBA. They suffocate teams on that end of the court and it has made their offense look even better at times.

Earlier in the season, the Celtics’ offense was hard to watch, but they have learned that good defense can create good offense. Now fast forward to the last week of the season and Boston is first in opponent’s field goal percentage, 12th in points off turnovers, and 2nd in limiting their opponent’s second-chance points.

Rebounding on defense is one thing, but with how slow they have played this season, being 12th in points off turnovers is impressive. They also have realized that doing all of these things in the first two quarters lays the groundwork for future success in the second half.

Not only does Boston play with the lead a lot, but being able to treat the first two quarters like the fourth defensively is frustrating for their opponents. It’s one of the reasons their first-half numbers have been so good this season and one of the reasons I like them in the first half tonight.

Boston Defense vs. Chicago Defense

Boston has allowed a league-best 106.1 points per 100 possessions overall this season, but in the first half, they are three full points better on defense with a 103.1 DRtg. Some of that has to do with their legs being fresher and having some big halftime leads where they were outscored in the second half.

Generally speaking, it doesn’t matter where they play, the C’s bring the defense. On the road this season they own a 101.8 Drtg in the first half and even against a talented Bulls offense, the C’s will be able to hold them down in the first half.

The key may not even be the Boston defense, but the Bulls’. Chicago has struggled this season in first halves and in full games playing defense. In two games against the Celtics this season, Chicago has allowed 126 points per 100 possessions in the first halves.

Combine that with how poorly the Bulls have played this season on defense and I expect Boston to come out ahead at the half, and the full game over to cash. Boston’s second-half performance in both those games was shaky and without Robert Williams, the C’s defense will suffer some.

The Sharp Picks

I think Boston’s defense holds serve in the first half for the cover, but the flood gates may open in the second. Chicago is still capable of scoring the ball at home. They own the league’s fourth-best offense at home this season.

I see Boston holding them down early only to have the pace increase in the second half while the Bulls try to stage a comeback. For the reasons above, invest in the spread and total for your NBA picks.
