76ers vs. Hornets NBA Picks: How to Bet Philadelphia’s Visit to Charlotte

The Philadelphia 76ers travel to North Carolina to take on a depleted Charlotte Hornets team. It was announced that the Hornets starting backcourt will be out for an extended period due to health and safety protocols. As a result, the Sixers come into this game as road favorites at top betting sites despite the fact they have lost nine of their last thirteen games.

Hornets in a Tough Spot Without Starting Backcourt

On Saturday, the Charlotte Hornets announced that both LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier will miss extended time due to health and safety protocols. This is a massive blow for a Hornets team that seemed like they were starting to figure things out. They had just snapped a three-game losing streak that started with a bad loss to the Houston Rockets by beating the Hawks yesterday without both Ball and Rozier.

It was a very impressive win but it will be hard to repeat the trick tonight against the Sixers. Philly has lost 9 of their last 13 games and will be desperate to turn things around. With Charlotte playing in a back-to-back situation, with travel minus two of their three best players, you would expect the Sixers to handle their business tonight. That's what the market expects anyway as Philly comes into this game as -6.5-point road favorites despite their recent struggles.

This Will Be a Half Court Affair

The Sixers record against the spread (ATS) is identical to their overall record on the season which stands at 12-11. While the Sixers ATS record as road favorites this season is a good one (3-0), that stat is also a bit misleading. They haven't been road favorites since November 4th which was 9 road games ago. They have not been road favorites since and that in itself speaks volumes in terms of where they are at right now.

In terms of this game, my official NBA pick is Under 219.5 for a few reasons. Without Ball and Rozier, it has to be expected that the Hornets' pace will be affected. Both players are top three on the Hornets in terms of usage rating and are two of the three primary ball handlers on the team. With only Ish Smith left to handle point guard duties, it's only natural to expect their pace to be affected.

On top of that, the Sixers play at the slowest pace in the league. They don't want to play fast so they'll be happy about the Hornets style of play with their starting backcourt unavailable. On top of all of these factors, the Hornets played last night in Atlanta so Philly has the rest advantage with travel. The one concern here is the Hornets defense which is in the conversation for worst in the league. I'm taking the under despite that because the Sixers offense hasn’t looked right for a while now.

With the players that the Hornets will be missing, defense is the only chance that Charlotte has of being successful during this period. While it might seem like wishful thinking that Charlotte will all of a sudden step up defensively, remember two weeks ago, they had a stretch where they won 8 of 9. During that period, they were ranked 4th in the league in terms of defensive efficiency. They will need to tap into that during this difficult stretch that they are about to endure.
