New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox

Thursday, May 12, 2022 – 08:10 PM EDT at Guaranteed Rate Field

We get a glimpse of what the preseason MLB futures odds predicted could be an American League Playoff series when the New York Yankees, current leaders of the AL East, travel to Chicago to go up against a White Sox team that has rebounded from a slow start to presently sit second in the AL Central.

If the Yankees and White Sox do eventually meet in October, it would mark the first time the old foes got together in the postseason. New York has a 4-game lead over Tampa Bay in the AL East race entering this long series, while Chicago rests 2½-games behind Minnesota in the AL Central.

Who Starts Tonight?

New York is dipping down to the farm for a starting pitcher to begin this series, and calling up Luis Gil (0-0, 0.00) for a second taste of the bigs in his career.

Dylan Cease (3-1, 2.38) is on tap for Chicago, and the White Sox are priced around -140 at the MLB odds with an 8-run total juiced a little to the low side.

Gil’s promotion from Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre certainly isn’t because he was setting the minor leagues on fire so far. Following up on an unimpressive spring, Gil had a bloated 9.53 ERA across five starts (17 IP) down on the farm before his recall.

Still a few weeks shy of his 24th birthday, Gil did turn some heads last season when he posted a 1-1 record and 3.07 ERA in six starts August and September starts for the Yankees. His upper-90s fastball helped him strike out 38 batters in 29 innings, but Gil’s lack of control is still very much a work in progress.

Dylan Cease Analysis

Wallowing 5-games under .500 on May 1, Chicago has caught fire by winning seven of its last eight. The lone defeat was a wild, extra-inning 12-9 slugfest with Cleveland on Monday, but the pitchers have otherwise been brilliant by allowing just 10 runs in the seven victories combined.

Cease has helped the White Sox into the winner’s circle in each of these last three assignments, and five of six on the 2022 campaign. His latest trip to the hill saw Cease work 5 innings of 1-run baseball at Fenway Park last Saturday, striking out eight in a no-decision that Chicago pulled off with a 3-1 final in 10 innings as -135 chalk at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review).

A couple of starts last season is all Cease has to show on his résumé against the Yankees to date. Both wound up in the loss column for the White Sox with Cease working a combined 10.1 innings and surrendering 8 earned runs.

Yankees vs. White Socks: Expert Pick

New York ruled their Second City rivals last year, the Yankees winning five of the six contests with the White Sox. The Yankees own a 1,087-853 advantage over the White Sox over the history of their rivalry that began close to exactly 119 years ago, plus a few ties that were the results of suspended games back in the day.

In taking two of three in Chicago last season, New York improved its good run on the South Side with four wins in the last five, and 10 of the last 13. Two of the three contests at Guaranteed Rate Field in 2021 went past the totals at online betting sites, and ‘Over’ bettors have returned to the pay window in six of the last eight matchups in Chicago.

Mostly clear skies and the thermometer in the low-80s greet the start of Thursday night’s game. The forecast also calls for a 10-14 mph SSE breeze (in from left-center), something for bettors thinking about playing batter props in the game to consider.

While the wind could knock a few long flies down and keep them in the park, I’m still liking the ‘Over’ in this one for my free MLB picks. And while we’re at it, let’s also include a small play on New York hitters to continue their trend of coming up with a late hit for the dubya.
