New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox

Friday, July 08, 2022 – 07:10 PM EDT at Fenway Park

Series Opener Recap

The New York Yankees held off the Boston Red Sox in the first game of a four-game series in Boston.

The Yankees jumped out to a 5-0 lead but the Red Sox ultimately came within a run with plenty more baseball to be played. However, the Yankees shut the Red Sox down in the later innings and ended up getting the win.

New York reached 60 wins with the victory last night and will look to continue to extend their lead in the AL East against the Red Sox tonight.

Here are our MLB picks and predictions for tonight’s rivalry matchup between the Yankees and Red Sox.

The Pitching Matchup

The Yankees will send out Nestor Cortes, who is 7-3 with a 2.44 ERA on the season. Cortes started off the season red-hot but has since cooled down a bit.

In the last 30 days, Cortes has had a 5.60 xFIP despite striking out 22.3% of batters and walking under 5% of batters.

Cortes, a lefty, has struggled more against righties in the last 30 days.

Meanwhile, Connor Seabold will get the call for the Red Sox. He’s currently just 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA on the season. However, in the last 30 days, he’s thrown against 44 batters and has an xFIP of 4.79.

Seabold has allowed a BABIP of .462 while allowing 44.8% of hard contact in the last 30 days. He’s certainly beatable.

Who Has the More Favorable Lineup?

The Yankees are hitting a .232 ISO and wOBA of .322 against righties in the last 30 days using the projected lineup. Only Josh Donaldson and Isiah Kiner-Falefa have struggled against righties in the last 30 days in this Yankees lineup.

The Yankees have also walked 11.1% of the time in the last 30 days and have minimized ground balls to 37.2% in that same time frame.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox have had to rely on Rafael Devers for most of their offense recently. Against a left-handed pitcher, the Red Sox look so much better, despite Devers not hitting lefties all that well.

The Red Sox have a .188 ISO and wOBA of .373 against lefties in the last 30 days using their projected lineup.

J.D. Martinez, Xander Bogaerts, Trevor Story, Alex Verdugo, and Chrisitan Vazquez have all hit for a high ISO and/or a high wOBA against lefties in the last 30 days. That’s pretty appealing.

Game Prediction

Nestor Cortes has been much worse against right-handed hitting in the last 30 days. He’s allowed a .383 wOBA and ISO of .321 throughout his last 85 plate appearances against righties.

Of the Red Sox I mentioned above, only Alex Verdugo is left-handed. This means, there are still four batters that look to have solid potential against Cortes in tonight’s game when it comes to power and weighted on-base averages.

On the other hand, Seabold has struggled against both sides of the plate in a smaller sample size.

He’s allowed a .444 wOBA and ISO of .344 against his last 35 righties and a .540 wOBA and ISO of .250 against his last nine lefties.

That’s not going to get the job done against a 60-win Yankees team that continues to be clutch. The expectation is that Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo will be back in the lineup tonight, making it really challenging for Seabold.

The Pick

Although Cortes has a 2.44 ERA, his xFIP is starting to creep up. He’s been poor against righties recently and will take on many right-handed batters in the Red Sox lineup that have seen left-handed pitching very well as of late.

Meanwhile, Seabold has allowed a ton of hard contact, lacks ground balls, and has struggled against both sides of the plate in the last 30 days.

The Yankees can show off their power as well. Therefore, with my MLB Play of the Day, I’m taking Over 9.5 in this game between the Red Sox and Yankees. We got 11 yesterday and should get double digits again tonight.

Final Score Prediction: Yankees 7, Red Sox 5
