Yankees vs. Red Sox MLB Best Bets for Thursday

We now enter the Yankees-Red Sox portion of the baseball season. It seems like New York and Boston are always playing each other, but there’s been a nearly three-month break this year. The two rivals and ESPN favorites opened the season with three games against each other but haven’t played since.

That’s about to change. The Yankees head to Boston on Thursday to start a four-game weekend series, and they’ll play each other 16 times the rest of the way this season. For the Yankees, one out of every five games in the second half of the season will be against the Red Sox. Let’s see what the MLB odds tell us at the best sportsbooks!

New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox

Thursday, July 07, 2022 – 07:10 PM EDT at Fenway Park

Big Lead

This edition of New York-Boston will match up the top two teams in the American League East and two of the top four teams in the American League. However, there doesn’t seem to be quite as much urgency surrounding this series as Yankees-Sox matchups of the past.

That’s because the Yankees are in the process of running away with the division. On a record pace, New York has stormed to a MLB best 59-23 record. The Red Sox went 20-6 in June but weren’t able to put much pressure on the top team.

They open play 14 games back in the division, tied with Tampa Bay for second place—and the top Wild Card spot—but just a half game away from being fourth in the five-team East.

As a result, there doesn’t appear to be a “let’s get ‘em” showdown mentality heading into the series.

“We’ll see what happens,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “We feel like we belong in the conversation. They’ve been great so far. We’ll see how it goes.”

The Yankees will likely be without a key lineup component, at least for the start of the series. Anthony Rizzo missed the last two games, in Pittsburgh, and the team isn’t optimistic he’ll be able to return on Thursday.

“At about game time after he’d been through some things (to test the injury), I talked to him a little bit and he definitely felt better,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said on Wednesday. “We’ll see how he is. I wouldn’t expect him in there. … It’s a day-to-day thing. Hopefully he’ll continue to improve with the rehab and we’ll see where we’re at (Thursday) and into the weekend.”

The Yankees will start ace right-hander Gerrit Cole. He’s 7-2, 2.99 on the year. The Yankees have won five of his last six starts.

Fighting for Position

The Red Sox have turned around the season after opening 10-19. Boston is firmly in the playoff mix, but Boston is still unproven against the best teams in the American League. The Sox are coming off of two losses in a three-game series against the Rays, currently tied with them for second, and lost two of three to Toronto—a half game back—last week.

Boston has played eight series against AL East teams this year and lost them all. The Red Sox are currently 9-18 against their division, 36-19 against everyone else.

“We got off to a terrible start and this is where we’re at,” Cora said. “On a daily basis, regardless of who you play, it’s the day we have to attack. ... We are where we’re at. We won 45 games in the first half and we know where we’re at in the standings and what we have to do.”

Boston counters Cole with a rookie—Josh Winckowski. The right-hander is 3-2 with a 3.12 ERA. He has yet to face a winning team in his brief MLB career. The best foe he’s seen is .500 Cleveland, and his five opponents are a combined .427 this year.

The Picks

They say you should throw the records out when rivals play, and that’s what you’d have to do in order to take Boston in this one. Other than home park, all the advantages seem to be going New York’s way.

Vegas seems to be putting a lot of weight on Fenway, however, so taking the Yankees, with Cole against an unproven rookie, isn’t as expensive as you might think. I'll take the Yankees in a high-scoring game with my MLB picks.
