After meeting for the first time this season less just last week, the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners get together once again when they begin a new set on Monday’s MLB odds card.

Despite not really being able to make any headway in cutting the gap between them and the Houston Astros in the NL West race, the Seattle Mariners have seen an uptick in attendance over the last six weeks, and that should make for a playoff atmosphere when they begin a series on Monday against the New York Yankees.

New York Yankees vs. Seattle Mariners

Monday, August 08, 2022 – 10:10 PM EDT at T-Mobile Park

Who Are Today's Starting Pitchers?

Two long and lean right-handers are showing up as the probable pitchers for the series opener, New York’s Jameson Taillon (10-2, 3.96) and Logan Gilbert (10-4, 3.09) for Seattle.

The Yankees are showing up as small chalk for the contest with a 7½-run total that is generally priced to the ‘Over.’

Season Series

Taking two of three from the Yankees in New York during the first half of last week was a moral victory for the Mariners as well as a boost in the standings, those results marking the first time since April 2016 – a string of 11 series – for Seattle to win a set from their East Coast rivals.

Seattle is now looking to win its first season series from New York since 2002 (there have been a few ties), and the Mariners are looking to win their first home series from the Yankees since May 2013.

Rivalry Trends

  • Even after dropping the series last week, the Yankees have still won 22 of the last 30 meetings to build a 261-192 all-time advantage in the rivalry.
  • Last week’s series opener in the Bronx pushed a 9-run total at top-rated sportsbooks, and the next two contests went ‘Over’ totals that ran 7 and 8½.
  • Six of the last nine clashes in Seattle failed to reach the scoreboard targets.

Pitchers Analysis

Jameson Taillon

After three successive starts that went into the win column for New York, Taillon laid a bit of an egg last Tuesday at home against the Mariners who cracked a couple of homers and scored 6 times (5 earned) before chasing the 30-year-old in the fifth inning. It was a no-decision for Taillon and an 8-6 loss for New York eventually.

Taillon was coming off another no-decision at Yankee Stadium to close his July, tossing 6 scoreless innings against the Kansas City Royals and striking out 8 in a contest New York ultimately won 1-0 on an Aaron Judge walk-off homer.

His last three road assignments have not gone well, Taillon working a combined 13 innings in matchups against the Pirates, Red Sox, and Orioles who scored 13 times while popping 5 home runs. The Yankees lost two of the three contests.

Logan Gilbert

No major league pitcher has endured a tougher stretch this season than the one Gilbert has been going through the past couple of weeks, making consecutive starting assignments against the Houston Astros and now climbing the hill for his second straight outing against the Yankees.

Gilbert pitched very well against Houston, working 6 innings and allowing a couple of runs each time, only to not receive much help from his offense and having the misfortune of going up against leading AL Cy Young candidate Justin Verlander in one of the contests.

Like Taillon, Gilbert didn’t pitch well at all last Tuesday in New York where the Mariners were +145 underdogs at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), coming out of the game with the score tied and having surrendered 6 runs before Seattle rallied with a couple of late plate crossings for an 8-6 triumph.

Seattle's Weather Forecast

Though it might be known for clouds and rain most of the time, Mother Nature has a beautiful Monday in store for Seattle with sunny skies all day long, the thermometer still in the low-80s at first pitch, and a light 5-7 mph NNW breeze (left to right).

MLB Best Bet for Today

Coming out on the wrong side of the MLB scores so frequently against the Yankees has to wear on the Mariners, but maybe that series victory in New York a week ago is a sign of things to come as Seattle reverses the curse.

Monday’s biggest question is after getting knocked around by the opposing lineups when they squared off six days ago, how will Taillon and Gilbert reverse those results? I’m going to play the bats again with my free MLB picks.
