The New York Yankees are currently 47-16 on the season and haven’t missed a beat all year. But with a left-hander on the mound for New York, can the Blue Jays win the first game of the series?

Let’s see what the MLB odds tell us at the top sportsbooks! Here are our picks and predictions for Friday’s game between the Yankees and Blue Jays.

New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Friday, June 17, 2022 – 07:07 PM EDT at Rogers Centre

MLB Teams Standings

How Are the Yankees Doing?

  • The New York Yankees are absolutely rolling right now.
  • The Yankees are coming off a sweep against the Tampa Bay Rays
  • While the games were close, the Yankees found ways to defeat a huge divisional rival.
  • The Yankees are now 47-16 on the season and have the best record in the MLB by far.

How Are the Blue Jays Doing?

  • The Yankees will head to Toronto to take on an extremely hot Blue Jays team.
  • Toronto is 37-26 on the season.
  • A series win over New York would only help them in the AL East standings.

Who Is Pitching for the Yankees Today?

The Yankees will send out left-hander Jordan Montgomery to pitch the first game of the series. Montgomery has a 3.88 xFIP in the last 30 days with 18.3% of strikeouts and 1.7% of walks.

He’s been incredible for the Yankees, who currently have the best pitching staff in baseball, but facing a Toronto lineup filled with righties could hurt his chances of pitching well.

Who Is Pitching for the Blue Jays Today?

On the other hand, the Blue Jays will send out Ross Stripling, who has stepped up in a big way.

Stripling had a terrific last four weeks and now has a 3.59 xFIP in the last 30 days with 22.9% of strikeouts and 2.9% of walks.

Yankees Lineup Analysis

  • The Yankees have a .253 ISO and wOBA of .351 against righties in the last 30 days with their projected lineup.
  • New York is also striking out under 20% of the time and continues to walk at a very high pace against righties.
  • The Yankees have hit just 15.4% of line drives against righties using their projected lineup in the last 30 days.
  • Their line drives against righties are a bit concerning, especially knowing Stripling has limited line drives to 15.4% in the last 30 days as well.

Blue Jays Lineup Analysis

  • Meanwhile, the Blue Jays have a .339 ISO and wOBA of .465 against lefties in the last 30 days.
  • Toronto has struck out just 13% of the time with their projected lineup.
  • The Blue Jays have a full lineup of righties to take on Montgomery.
  • Only Bo Bichette has struggled to get on base at a high rate against lefties for the Blue Jays.

Yankees vs. Blue Jays: Game Prediction

Blue Jays Lineup Against Jordan Montgomery

Both pitchers tonight have been on their A-games recently. But only the Blue Jays match up extraordinarily well. The Blue Jays lineup has hit lefties at a ridiculous pace and while that will slow down to some degree, this isn’t a fluke.

The Blue Jays literally have nine righties in their lineup including Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who has a .923 ISO and wOBA of .814 against lefties in his last 17 plate appearances.

It’s not the biggest sample size, but that’s a sample size of about five or six games against lefties. He’s destroyed them along with the rest of the lineup.

Yankees Lineup Against Ross Stripling

Meanwhile, Ross Stripling has had a BABIP of .176 in the last 30 days. He’s been able to earn 51.9% of ground balls and has allowed 15.4% of line drives, which has helped his case, but he’s also giving up 51.9% of hard contact.

Sometimes hard contact on the ground could be good to turn a quick double-play, but overall, hard contact in the air or down the line isn’t as good. Anyway, the Yankees are hitting just 15.4% of line drives and just 35.6% of ground balls. That basically suggests that the Yankees are hitting a lot of fly balls in the last 30 days.

That suggestion is also true with the lineup hitting 49.1% of line drives in the last 30 days. This isn’t Yankee Stadium. Therefore, the Yankees could have trouble scoring runs against Stripling if they don’t hit line drives at a high rate.

MLB Betting Pick for Today

With that said, I like the Blue Jays moneyline for my MLB pick of the day.

The Blue Jays are at home, with a -110 price tag against a lefty. I’ll take that anytime, no matter how good the Yankees have been recently.
