The New York Yankees will look to finish their home series strong against the Chicago White Sox. The Yankees and White Sox will play a doubleheader after Friday’s game was rained out. How will the Yankees play in the second game that’s being featured on ESPN?

Let’s see what the MLB odds tell us at the top-rated sportsbooks

Chicago White Sox vs. New York Yankees

Sunday, May 22, 2022 – 03:05 PM and 07:08 PM EDT at Yankee Stadium

The New York Yankees were rained out on Friday and will now play a doubleheader tonight against the Chicago White Sox.  The second game of the doubleheader will be featured on ESPN. That’s the game I’ll be writing about.

The Yankees defeated the White Sox in yesterday’s series opener, 7-5. These two teams are pretty much rivals at this point after Josh Donaldson said a comment to Tim Anderson that he probably wishes he could take back now.

Tonight’s ESPN game could be the rubber match of the three-game series. Or the Yankees might have already won the series. Here are MLB picks and predictions for the final game of the series between the Yankees and White Sox.

The Pitching Match-Up

The New York Yankees will send out Luis Severino for the final game of the series. Severino is 3-0 with a 3.63 ERA to start the season. He also has a WHIP of 1.18 and has looked good in his comeback season.

In the last 30 days, Severino has a 4.38 xFIP but has struck out 26.7% of batters in that time frame. Lefties have had success against Severino, with a .337 wOBA and ISO of .333 in their last 33 plate appearances against Severino.

On the other hand, Michael Kopech will man the mound for the White Sox. In the last 30 days, he has had a 5.16 xFIP with 12.6% of walks. He’s also inducing just 32.3% of ground balls in the last 30 days but has kept power numbers down.

Who Has the More Favorable Lineup?

The Yankees do. They have an ISO of .174 and wOBA of .345 against righties in the last 30 days. The Bronx Bombers are seriously one of the best power teams in the MLB right now with a stack of Aaron Judge, Anthony Rizzo, Giancarlo Stanton, and Josh Donaldson in the lineup.

All four of those batters are hitting a very high ISO number against righties in the last 30 days.

Meanwhile, the exact opposite is taking place for the White Sox. The White Sox have an ISO of .111 and wOBA of .281 in the last 30 days with their projected lineup. Only Andrew Vaughn has hit for consistent power and that’s likely because he was on the shelf earlier this month.

Game Prediction

Currently, the White Sox are hitting 50.7% of ground balls while walking just 5.8% of the time. They’re hitting a .111 ISO and have a wOBA of .281 in the last 30 days. The White Sox don’t strike out at a high rate but Luis Severino is earning 26.7% of strikeouts. If the White Sox start to strike out, it could be a long night for Chicago in the Bronx.

Meanwhile, Michael Kopech has a 1.54 ERA on the season through seven starts. In those seven starts, Kopech has watched the White Sox lose four of the seven games.

Kopech has had some above-average games but ultimately, he’s been way worse than his ERA wants to let on. The Yankees’ offense could take advantage of this as they’ve got a whole lot of power in the lineup tonight.

Make sure to check the lineups before wagering, however. This is the second game of the doubleheader, meaning some guys could be out and not starting the second game.

The Pick

Michael Kopech’s ERA tells you a different story than his analytics. He hasn’t given up a whole lot of power but he also hasn’t had any amazing performances. He pitched six innings just two times this season and has walked at least two batters in every start but one.

The Yankees are certainly an offense that can get to Kopech and they did in his first outing against them. The Yankees scored three runs on one hit. Because Kopech had four walks, the Yankees found a way.

Severino, on the other hand, hasn’t faced the White Sox and has been giving up a lot of home runs. Severino has allowed five home runs in seven starts this year.

Therefore, I’ll grab the over in this one.

For your MLB pick, take the over in Yankees and White Sox Game 2.  Again, this is the second game of the two.
