The top sportsbooks have released their MLB odds for today’s baseball action and three games, in particular, interest me as worth investing in:

  • Cubs vs. Blue Jays
  • Red Sox vs. Twins
  • Royals vs. White Sox

For reasons that I will explain, you should play the side in all three games but take one of those teams on the run line.

Chicago Cubs vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Tuesday, August 30, 2022 – 07:07 PM EDT at Rogers Centre

Who Starts for Chicago?

Chicago starts Marcus Stroman today. Despite being one starting pitcher in a long list of pitchers who have started for the Cubs this year, Stroman is by far his team's least profitable pitcher.

Overall, he is yielding -7.90 units. His most recent stretch of starts does a lot to explain this negative figure.

The Cubs have lost four of the last five games in which he started, despite being favored in three of them.

Stroman vs. Blue Jay Batters

After falling behind 4-0 to the Cubs last night, Blue Jay bats came alive, tying the game in the eighth before winning it in the 11th.

They are primed to build off this late-game surge because they match up well against Stroman.

Specifically, Toronto ranks fifth in slugging against his favorite pitches from righties.

Who Starts for Toronto?

Kevin Gausman starts for Toronto. Similar to Stroman, Gausman has been a bad bet this year. However, and most crucial, this has not been the case for Gausman in his most recent starts.

Toronto has won four of the last five games in which he started, even though four of those opponents have a winning record, and the one other game was at Boston.

Gausman vs. Cub Batters

Gausman is coming off an unfortunate start in which his 7.20 ERA masks his 0.73 FIP (like ERA but factors out fielding), which reflects how well he actually performed.

He will build off of this strong performance against Boston because he matches up superbly against Cub batters.

They rank 22nd in slugging against his favorite pitches from righties.

Boston Red Sox vs. Minnesota Twins

Tuesday, August 30, 2022 - 07:40 PM EDT at Target Field

Who Starts for Boston?

Kutter Crawford starts for Boston today. Crawford is perpetually liable to implode. I'm not sure there is another pitcher who has yielded an ERA of 18.00 or higher in four different games.

He has, moreover, yielded an ERA of 9.00 or higher in six different contests.

Crawford vs. Twin Batters

Problematically, Crawford almost routinely allows batters to generate hard contact off his pitches.

This young, unproven pitcher struggles to keep the ball on the ground, repeatedly allowing very high fly ball and home run rates.

Twin batters merit optimism today particularly because they rank seventh in slugging against Crawford's pitches.

Who Starts for Minnesota?

Chris Archer starts for Minnesota. Archer is glad to pitch in Minneapolis where he yields a 3.15 FIP.

Pertinently to my best bet for this game, he has yielded a sub-2.00 FIP in five straight games.

Kansas City Royals vs. Chicago White Sox

Tuesday, August 30, 2022 - 08:10 PM EDT at Guaranteed Rate Field

Who Starts for Kansas City?

Brady Singer starts for Kansas City today. Singer is in a strong spot in this game because he is facing the White Sox.

In his career against them, he boasts a 2.91 ERA in seven starts.

He carries strong form into this game, as part of which he has endured six or more innings in nine straight starts.

Singer vs. White Sox Batters

Few White Sox batters can intimidate Kansas City's starter. Those that can are dinged up.

Tim Anderson, for example, is on the IL, and Eloy Jimenez's BA and slugging rate have both dropped about 11 points in the past week and a half as he deals with a leg issue.

Who Starts for the White Sox?

Hardly a desirable candidate to stem his team's four-game losing streak, Lucas Giolito starts for the White Sox tonight.

Compared to how they match up against other pitchers, Royal batters enjoy a rather positive outlook against him.

  • Bobby Witt
  • Michael Taylor
  • Salvador Perez

Those three players look the most dangerous tonight in case you like to play some player props.

All three slug .750 or much higher in at least six career at-bats with Giolito on the mound.
