San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants

Wednesday, August 31, 2022 – 03:45 PM EDT at Oracle Park

Joe Musgrove

  • Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed

Series finale between NL West division rivals and the Padres’ final game in San Francisco this season. San Diego right-hander Joe Musgrove has owned the Giants in 2022, going 1-0 with a 0.43 ERA in 21.0 innings. He has allowed only 11 hits with 14 strikeouts as San Francisco batters are hitting .155 off him. Musgrove has 18 quality starts overall on the year.

One thing to note: Luis Campusano is expected to be behind the plate for the Padres. It will be the first time this season Austin Nola will not be Musgrove’s catcher. Campusano, who will be making his 10th career start at catcher, has spent a significant amount of time watching video of Musgrove’s three starts against the Giants this season. Nola will sit in on the pregame meeting between Campusano and Musgrove to offer insight.

“I think we’ll be dialed in,” Musgrove said.

MLB Pick: Joe Musgrove Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-180) at BetOnline

Brandon Crawford

  • Over/Under 0.5 Total Bases

One Giants batter who has done well career off Musgrove is shortstop Brandon Crawford. He’s having a disappointing season overall in hitting just .226 but is 6-for-20 with three doubles, a triple and a homer career off Musgrove, a stellar OPS of 1.117.

MLB Pick: Brandon Crawford Over 0.5 total Bases (-175) at BetOnline

Josh Bell

  • Over/Under 1.5 Total Bases

For a Padres batter, we’ll go with Josh Bell even though he’s just 1-for-10 career of Giants starter Alex Wood. After going 7-for-58 (.121) in his 1st 16 games as a Padre, Bell has now hit .345 in his last nine games with two doubles, two homers and seven RBIs.

MLB Pick: Josh Bell Over 1.5 total bases (+135) at BetOnline

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Miami Marlins

Wednesday, August 31, 2022 – 06:40 PM EDT at loanDepot Park

Drew Rasmussen

  • Over/Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed
  • To Record A Win

I have to say I can’t remember anything like what has happened against the Miami Marlins so far this week. On Monday, NL Cy Young candidate Tony Gonsolin was scheduled to start in South Florida but was scratched beforehand due to injury. The Marlins lost against a lower-tier fill-in anyways.

On Tuesday, AL Cy Young candidate Shane McClanahan of the Rays was scratched literally about five minutes before his start in Miami because of left shoulder impingement. That could be catastrophic to the Rays’ World Series hopes with McClanahan undergoing further tests today. The Marlins lost anyways.

I had backed both Gonsolin and McClanahan against one of the worst lineups in the majors and obviously both plays voided. Well, I’m stubborn so let’s go right back to it tonight with Tampa right-hander Drew Rasmussen (9-4, 2.77).

He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in every start since the All-Star break, and his 1.89 ERA since the break ranks sixth in the majors (minimum 35 innings pitched). Rasmussen is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in eight career innings vs. Miami, which hasn’t named its starting pitcher yet. Frankly, it doesn’t much matter in terms of Tampa Bay winning.

MLB Pick: Drew Rasmussen Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-140) at BetOnline

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Mets

Wednesday, August 31, 2022 – 07:10 PM EDT at Citi Field

Jacob DeGrom

  • Over/Under 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed

The first game of the possible NLCS preview lived up to the hype Tuesday with the Dodgers winning 4-3 despite not using any of their key relievers. Journeyman Jake Reed got his first career save and was only added to the active roster a few hours before the game. With the victory, the Dodgers became the first team to have 90 wins this season. They joined the 2017 Dodgers, '01 Mariners and 1998 Yankees as the only clubs in the Wild Card era to win 90 or more through their first 128 games of the season.

The Dodgers may well lose tonight and they are the biggest underdogs they have been all season (only fourth time overall) as they face two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom (3-1, 2.15 ERA).

Normally, I would never go over a deGrom earned runs total, but only 1.5 ER against this Los Angeles lineup? Have to go over it for my last MLB pick. All it takes is a Freddie Freeman two-run homer, etc. Or all it may take is a reliever to allow a deGrom inherited runner to score.

There are only a few teams in the majors deGrom is winless against, but the Dodgers are one: He’s 0-4 in 10 career starts against them despite an excellent 2.87 ERA.

MLB Pick: Jacob DeGrom Over 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-107) at BetOnline
