One way or another, a 3-game win streak will come to an end on Friday’s baseball betting card when the New York Yankees host the Detroit Tigers.
Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees
Friday, June 03, 2022 – 07:05 PM EDT at Yankee Stadium
Yankees Are Having a Good Series Start
With machine-like efficiency, the New York Yankees are making good on preseason MLB future odds and have a comfortable lead atop the AL East Division race as they begin a weekend series with the Detroit Tigers.
The baseball odds for the series opener reflect the mismatch between the first-place Yankees and a Tigers team that is nine games below .500 and sitting fourth in the AL Central.
New York is up above -300 on the moneyline for the contest as Gerrit Cole (4-1, 3.12) faces Detroit’s Elvin Rodriguez (0-0, 6.17) on the hill, and 8 is the scoreboard target.
Elvin Rodriguez’s Numbers
There had been some questions about Rodriguez making this start after he left his previous outing early due to cramping, but the 24-year-old rookie responded well to treatment and was pronounced fit to make what will be just his third career start.
Rodriguez was enjoying the best outing of his short career last Sunday against Cleveland when he was forced from the mound an inning shy of qualifying for potentially his first major league win.
The Dominican posted four scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out four, and the Tigers went on to win the contest 2-1 as +145 underdogs at Heritage Sports (visit our Heritage Sports Review).
With just three previous big-league appearances and one of those as a long reliever, Rodriguez will be pitching in Yankee Stadium for the first time.
He entered the 2022 season ranked as Detroit’s No. 18 prospect, and was 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA in five starts and a relief outing at Triple-A Toledo before being called up.
Gerrit Cole’s Numbers
We are not surprised to see a hefty moneyline on New York with Cole on the mound.
His shortest moneyline this season came the last time out when the Yankees were -145 favorites on MLB odds board and dropped a 3-1 decision this past Saturday at Tampa Bay.
It’s not like Cole pitched all that poorly last Saturday against the Rays, taking a no-decision with six innings of one-run baseball while striking out 10.
It was certainly an improvement over his previous assignment when Cole allowed five runs in a 6-4 loss against the Orioles with New York laying a fat -300 moneyline.
New York is definitely hoping Cole has a better outing against the Tigers on Friday night than when he faced them in Detroit during the second week of the season.
Cole was yanked after just two outs in the second inning having already walked five on a cold and blustery evening at Comerica Park, though the Yankees eventually rallied to get the dubya in that one.
The Yankees visited Detroit a little more than six weeks ago, and won two of the three games at Comerica Park.
Two of the three contests remained ‘under’ the totals at top-rated sportsbooks, with the Tigers’ lone victory a 3-0 shutout authored by Michael Pineda and a quartet of Detroit relievers.
- The clubs have split four of the last five season series with each other. They did not meet in 2020.
- The Tigers have won their last five games at Yankee Stadium where totals ran 2-4 O/U in the 2019 and 2021 seasons.
- The Yankees are 18-16 in the rivalry since the start of the 2016 season, and lead the all-time series 1,082-963.
Bronx Weather Forecast
The weatherman is calling for a lot of clouds in the New York City area on Friday evening, but none that will bring rain to interrupt the contest that should begin with temps in the mid-70s along with a WSW breeze (out to left-enter) in the 8-10 mph range.
MLB Pick and Prediction for Today
New York is coming off a doubleheader sweep of the Angels on Thursday, but can’t get too comfortable about a 5½-game lead over a Toronto Blue Jays bunch that has won eight in a row.
Detroit should be feeling good about itself after winning four of five from division rival and AL Central leader Minnesota this week.
Who to Bet On?
It's never any fun for yours truly to play chalk that is this thick, even in the case of it being a game the Yankees should win four out of five times.
I’m going after that one time in five with my MLB pick by making a run-line play on Detroit.
