The Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics will play a doubleheader to start off the second half of the season. It’s not exciting baseball, but it’s baseball. Let’s see what the MLB odds tell us at the best sportsbooks!

Detroit Tigers vs. Oakland Athletics

Thursday, July 21, 2022 – 07:07 PM EDT at Oakland Coliseum

What to Expect From These Teams

There aren’t many games on the slate in the MLB. But at least we have something. The Detroit Tigers will take on the Oakland Athletics in a doubleheader today. I’ll be covering the second game of the doubleheader, which is tonight’s game at 7:07 pm ET.

Lineups are usually a little harder to predict, but what won’t be difficult to predict is that both teams won’t be making the playoffs. Neither team has won 40 games through the first half of the season and both teams are drowning in their divisional standings. Anyway, we still get baseball. Here are our MLB picks and predictions for tonight’s game between the Athletics and Tigers.

The Pitching Matchup

The Detroit Tigers will send Garrett Hill to the mound for the second game of the doubleheader. He has a 1-1 record with a 5.73 ERA on the year.

However, in the last 30 days, he has a 6.44 xFIP with just 9.1% of strikeouts. He’s struggled more against lefties, allowing a .370 wOBA and ISO of .375 in his last 17 plate appearances against lefties.

Meanwhile, he’ll take on Frankie Montas of the Athletics. Montas might be 3-9 on the year, but he still has a 3.26 ERA.

In the last 30 days, Montas has had a 3.98 xFIP with nearly 30% of strikeouts. He’s been a solid pitcher that just doesn’t get much run support. He’ll be looking to perform well in the next couple of weeks so that he can get traded to a contender.

Who Has the More Favorable Lineup?

The Tigers have been striking out at a miserable rate this year. They’ll likely have at least five players striking out 20% of the time or greater against righties and with the way Montas has pitched, more strikeouts are likely on the horizon.

In the second game, the normal Tigers lineup likely won’t be starting. So we don’t know exactly what will be sent out by the Tigers. Eric Haase and Miguel Cabrera could sit in one of those two games. Either way, the Tigers have been terrible offensively against righties and should end up struggling in this game.

On the other hand, the Athletics haven’t been much better offensively. Only Elvis Andrus has an ISO above .136 in the lineup against righties in the last 30 days. Sean Murphy at least has a .367 wOBA against righties in the last 30 days.

Other than that, it’s a poor lineup. But going up against Hill should help the Athletics put up some runs.

Game Prediction

I’d much rather back Frankie Montas here. I know he rarely gets wins with the Athletics, but the A’s are finally taking on a team that is just as bad as them.

Hill has a high xFIP with low strikeouts and rarely gets ground balls. Instead, he’s giving up a ton of fly balls that can get out of the yard, along with over 47% of hard contact in the last 30 days.

The Athletics haven’t been great against righties, but at least they’re limiting ground balls against righties as a team in the last 30 days, keeping that number under 40%.

This is truly a pitching mismatch between Montas and Hill. Montas is good enough to join a contending team in the next couple of weeks while Hill is allowing an xFIP near 7.

Plus, the Tigers could send out a poor roster in the second game, depending on how the first game’s roster looks. Miguel Cabrera more than likely won’t come back from the All-Star break and play two games today. And the Tigers would much rather Cabrera and Eric Haase, for example, face the lefty in the early game.

Therefore, I think the Tigers’ lineup will be more of a B-squad for tonight’s game against Montas.

The Pick

Therefore, I’ll grab the Athletics at -165. The A’s are usually never worth a crazy moneyline tag, but today, I think it makes sense knowing the top hitters will likely play in the first game as the Tigers try to salvage one game of the doubleheader. Again, with my MLB Play of the Day, I’m taking the Athletics on the moneyline.
