With fireworks from the Fourth of July still ringing in our ears and Lee Greenwood’s song stuck in our head, we turn our attention to Tuesday’s sports betting calendar when the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox continue their series in Beantown.

Boston drew first blood in this week’s series against AL East rival Tampa Bay with a 4-0 decision on the MLB scoreboard in one of the early contests on the Fourth of July schedule, and the Red Sox will take aim at claiming the series win over the Rays on Tuesday.

Rays vs. Red Sox: Who Starts Today?

Tampa Bay hopes to even the set by sending sneaky lefthander Jeffrey Springs (3-2, 2.25) to the bump at Fenway against Boston’s Nick Pivetta (8-5, 3.23).

BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review) is carrying the Red Sox on a -125 chalk line with a scoreboard total of 9½ runs that is juiced a little extra to the low side.

Season Series Trends

This is just the second time the teams have met this season and the first series of 2022 at Fenway Park. The 3-game series down in Florida in late April ended with Rays and ‘Under’ backers cashing twice. The Red Sox have won 4 of the last 6 seasons' series from the Rays.

  • Boston won 7 of the 11 matchups at Fenway Park last season, including both contests during the ALDS.
  • ‘Over’ bettors cashed 9 of the 11 games in Boston in 2021, including the playoffs, and have returned to the pay window in 15 of the last 18 tilts at Fenway Park.
  • The Rays and Red Sox have a quick rematch next week at Tropicana Field.

Rays vs. Red Sox: Pitchers Analysis

Jeffrey Springs

A family medical matter forced Springs to skip his last start and Tampa Bay’s trip to Toronto, and the southpaw will be looking to use his high-spin four-seamer to help push the Rays into the winner’s circle for the sixth consecutive start.

Springs was last on the hill on June 24 at home against the Pirates in an interleague collision, and he struck out 9 over 6 innings while allowing 3 runs – all solo homers – in a matchup the Rays eventually won 4-3 in 10 innings as pronounced -210 chalk.

As a member of the Red Sox in the ill-fated 2020 campaign, this will be Springs’ first career start against Boston. He faced them once in the series at Tropicana Field back in April, a scoreless 2-inning stint out of the bullpen. Springs is 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA on the road (5 starts, 3 relief appearances).

Nick Pivetta

Talk about turning a rough start around. Boston lost Pivetta’s first 6 starts of 2021, and his ERA was up over 6.00 in early May. The Red Sox have since won 9 of his 10 assignments, good enough to add more than 9 units of profit to anyone following Pivetta on the MLB odds.

It was a no-decision for the Canadian last Wednesday in Toronto where he allowed 2 runs in 6 innings, Boston eventually coming around with a big 10th inning for a 6-5 win as plump +155 underdogs on the card.

Pivetta’s turn didn’t come up when the Red Sox played at Tampa Bay in April. His last two outings against the Rays in 2021 came during the ALDS, and both were long relief efforts. Despite a 2.95 ERA in 4 starts against Tampa Bay during the regular season, Boston lost three of the games.

Who Is the Umpire Today?

Mark Ripperger will be the umpire calling balls in strikes in the second game of this set. The veteran of 13 MLB seasons has shown no tendencies in his plate assignments with a 7-7 O/U record at the best sportsbooks and betting sites in 2022.

Boston's Weather Forecast

Will Mother Nature Impact Tuesday’s Game? Baseball bettors who like to put their wagers down closer to game time will want to get an update on the forecast before going to the window. That is due to the increased chance of rain once the sun begins to set in Boston.

Assuming the rain holds off, the weatherman is telling us to expect cloudy skies, temps in the mid-70s, and a 10-12 mph blow from the south (out to left).
