The Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays end their series with a rubber game on Wednesday’s card, and we’ve got a free MLB pick for the clash between AL East rivals.

Will the Tampa Bay Rays catch Boston in a tie for second place in the American League East Division on Wednesday, or will the Red Sox make a quick return to the win column to build a 2-game cushion in the race to see who is the runner-up to the Yankees?

Rays vs. Red Sox: Today's Pitchers

Inquiring minds want to know. Baseball fans also want to know if Boston rookie Brayan Bello (0-0, 0.00) is for real when he makes his MLB debut against Tampa Bay’s Corey Kluber (3-5, 3.91).

The Red Sox are small chalk according to the betting odds, with 9 for the total.

Series Highlights So Far

Both managers, Tampa Bay’s Kevin Cash and Boston’s Alex Cora, elected to go with the opener-bulk reliever approach in Monday’s opener, and it worked very well for the Red Sox, who closed as -115 chalk at Heritage Sports (visit our Heritage Sports Review) in their 4-0 blanking of the Rays.

Tampa Bay bounced back in Tuesday’s matchup with an 8-4 victory. Kevin Kiermaier drove in 4 runs and 5 Rays' relievers came to the rescue of starter Jeffrey Springs, who was making his first start at Fenway since being traded away by the Red Sox prior to the 2021 season.

Tuesday’s triumph pushed the Rays out in front of the Red Sox 3-2 in the season series. The final got past the total with a few innings to spare, the 16th time in the last 20 meetings between the clubs at Fenway Park for ‘Over’ bettors to go back to the pay window.

Rays vs. Red Sox: Pitchers Analysis

Corey Kluber

Kluber’s first start of July certainly didn’t go as planned. Closing as a +130 underdog on the MLB odds last Friday in Toronto, Kluber took the loss in a lopsided 9-2 Blue Jays win. The veteran was responsible for 5 of those runs and made it through just 3 innings.

The poor effort followed what had been a pretty good 6-week run for Kluber. In 8 starts from mid-May through June, the Alabama native pitched to a 2.70 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 43+ innings. Unfortunately, Tampa Bay supported him with just enough runs to win half of those assignments.

He faced the Red Sox once back in April, that contest taking place at Tropicana Field where Kluber went 5 frames and allowed all 4 runs in a 4-3 Boston triumph. Wednesday will be Kluber’s first start at Fenway Park since he was with the Indians in 2018.

Brayan Bello

Cora tried his best to keep things on the down-low as far as who would start Wednesday’s game for the Red Sox, but Bello couldn’t contain his excitement about being called up for his MLB debut and leaked the news to the media.

Even if Bello only becomes a serviceable starter for the back end of a rotation, he will be a bargain. Boston inked the slender Dominican for less than $30,000 in 2018, shortly after his 18th birthday. He climbed through the Red Sox system to become their top pitching prospect this year.

Bello really blossomed this year while splitting his time between Double-A and Triple-A. In 14 starts and a relief outing, he is 10-4 with a 2.33 ERA and 114 strikeouts (85 IP). His fastball is close to hitting triple digits on the radar gun, and Bello mixes it with a slider and changeup.

Who Is the Umpire Today?

Shane Livensparger lines up as the umpire behind the plate for the series finale.

Number 43 in your umpire program, Livensparger stands 6-11-1 O/U/P at top-rated sportsbooks when he calls balls and strikes this season. The Ohio native is 0-4 O/U at the Fenway dish in his career.

Boston's Weather Forecast

Wind is the only weather feature that might affect the final MLB score on Wednesday. The forecast calls for a 10 mph blowout of the south this evening in Boston, possibly giving balls headed towards the Green Monster a little extra push.

Rays vs. Red Sox: Betting Pick for Today

The Red Sox are close to having a couple of big arms back in the rotation with the impending returns of Nathan Eovaldi and Chris Sale, so it’s unclear if Bello will stick even if he has a strong MLB debut.

Still, I’m willing to take a flyer on the youngster with my Hump Day play. Boston wins, 5-4.
