Philadelphia Phillies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Thursday, May 12, 2022- 10:10 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium

Do Phillies Contend Their National League East Crown?

The Philadelphia Phillies hoped to contend for the National League East crown, but the first month and a half of the season haven’t turned out the way they hoped.

Philly is in fourth place in the East but just a half-game out of second place, and the Phillies are currently three games below .500, despite having the division’s second-best run differential.

The team got off to a solid start on its West Coast trip, winning a series in Seattle by taking two of three over the Mariners.

It was the Phillies’ first series win of the month and their first series win on the road since a week after Labor Day last September.

Philadelphia will now take its momentum to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers, who have the best record and run differential in the National League.

The Dodgers have a game and a half lead in the NL West, but they just lost their first series in May, dropping two of three at Pittsburgh.

The Dodgers had been 11-2 against teams with losing records this season before matching that loss total in three games against the Pirates.

Heating Up

The Phillies won a series for just the third time this season, snapping a skid of five losses in six games before heading to Seattle.

Rhys Hoskins has gotten red hot for Philadelphia. Hoskins went 6-for-13 against Seattle pitching and homered in each of the three games in the series, finishing with seven RBIs against the Mariners.

The RBI total matched his production for the previous 26 games, and it was more hits than he’d had in his previous 10 games.

He helped lead a Phillies offense that scored 17 in the three games after topping four runs in a contest just once in the previous five outings.

Do Zack Wheeler Is Back for this Game?

The Phillies will get starting pitcher Zack Wheeler back from the COVID injured list in time to start in Thursday’s series opener.

Wheeler hasn’t pitched since May 4, although manager Joe Girardi said the right-hander has “kept his arm going,” while waiting to clear the COVID protocols.

He’s 1-3 on the year with a 4.10 ERA, but he’s on a streak of 13.2 scoreless innings spanning his last two starts.

This series opens a brutal stretch for the Phillies, so Philadelphia will need to keep the momentum going from its successful Seattle trip.

Following the Dodgers, Philly plays San Diego, L.A. again, the Braves, Mets, Giants, Angels, and Brewers, seven teams that are a combined .615, with four of them leading their respective divisions.

Back Home Again

The Dodgers return to Los Angeles, where they are 10-2 on the season. L.A. lost in Pittsburgh to drop its first series since the end of April.

The Dodgers won seven of eight after that before stumbling against the Pirates.

Los Angeles got a surprisingly shaky performance from the pitching staff, giving up five runs in two of the three games in Pittsburgh.

The Dodgers staff had done that just twice in the previous 23 games.

The Dodgers have acted quickly to address the pitching staff, designating veteran Robbie Erlin for assignment and reportedly putting David Price on the trade market.

The team also has had a shaky offense. Despite scoring 11 in their lone win over the Pirates, the Dodgers were unable to produce much in the other two games.

Justin Turner is mired in a season-long slump and is currently hitting below .200.

Who Is Pitching for the Dodgers?

Los Angeles will start lefthander Tyler Anderson in the opener.

He was nearly dealt with the Phillies at last year’s deadline, but the Pirates weren’t happy with the health report on the Philadelphia prospects they would have gotten in return.

He now pitches against the Phillies, entering the game with a 3-0, 2.78 mark on the year.

The Picks

The Phillies have their most favorable pitching matchup of the four games, but it’s likely the Dodgers will still have the advantage, especially with Wheeler returning from the injured list.

For your MLB pick, look for the Dodgers to stay hot at home with a low-scoring win to start the series.
