A second matchup this season between the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants is part of the weekend sports betting calendar, and we’ve got an angle on Friday’s series opener.

San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants

Friday, May 20, 2022 – 10:15 PM EDT at Oracle Park

Just as it was last season, the NL West race is a three-team affair.

Two of the three squads battling it out at the top of the ranks collide for a crucial series this weekend in San Francisco where the Giants entertain the San Diego Padres, each side looking to close the gap on the front-running Los Angeles Dodgers.

Game 1 of the set is the final contest on the betting odds. San Diego is sending Sean Manaea (2-3, 3.77) to the mound with San Francisco handing the ball to Jakob Junis (1-1, 1.74), and it’s a pick ‘em at several wagering outlets with a 7½-run total that is generally taxed to the low side.

Padres and Manaea's Performance

Joe Girardi and the Padres finished a set Thursday afternoon in Philadelphia with a 2-0 victory on the MLB scoreboard as Yu Darvish and a couple of relievers combined to blank the Phillies, the triumph continuing what has been a successful 4-2 road trip that began with a series win in Atlanta.

Everything started so well for Manaea’s San Diego career, but it has since gone a bit south as the Padres have dropped each of his last four starting assignments – all four of those contests going ‘over’ the totals – though Manaea has actually logged quality outings his last two trips to the hill with a combined 13 IP and 6 ER allowed to Miami and Atlanta.

He took a tough loss in a 2-1 final when the Padres visited San Francisco back in April, and that was par for the course when Manaea pitched in the Golden Gate City in the past while with the Athletics, who managed to win just one of his three career starts for them at Oracle Park though he pitched to a respectable 3.17 ERA in those matchups.

Junis Second Career Against the Padres

Gabe Kapler and the Giants had Thursday off in advance of this series, returning home on Wednesday following a 3-3 road trip through St. Louis and Colorado, and they have been trending to the ‘over’ slightly this season (20-16-1) in part because of a lineup that ranks second in the National League averaging 5.11 runs a contest.

Junis was the bulk reliever in his first two appearances this season before starting against the Cardinals on his last two trips to the mound, home-and-away assignments against the Cardinals that the Giants split, receiving no support last Saturday in St. Louis where the Giants dropped a 4-0 decision.

This will be Junis’ second career start against the Padres – first as a Giant – and he got plenty of support in the first one back in 2017 as a rookie with Kansas City as the Royals rolled to an 8-3 win at Petco Park as small underdogs on the MLB odds.

Junis owns a 1.80 ERA in a start and long relief outing at Oracle Park this year.

Padres vs. Giants: Seasons Recap

San Francisco also hosted the Padres back during the first week of the season, and the Giants took two of three while San Diego played the road underdog at the best online betting sites.

In all three matchups, the Padres’ lone win came in the series opener on a tasty +145 moneyline. Two of the three contests stayed ‘under’ the totals.

Rivalry Trends

Winning on their own diamond has been the norm for the Giants against the Padres across the history of this rivalry, which dates back to San Diego’s inaugural season in 1969.

San Francisco won both of the 3-game sets at Oracle Park one year ago and split the 4-game series. Six of the 10 matchups in San Francisco failed to reach the totals.

MLB Weather Today Pick

There is going to be plenty of sunshine in San Francisco on Friday, and the first hour of the contest will include the last hour of those rays while the weatherman is forecasting the low-60s and a 10-14 mph westerly breeze (out to center) at first pitch.

Padres vs. Giants Picks and Predictions

San Diego has been a true road warrior with a 14-7 record away from home but San Francisco hits lefthanders well, and that has me on a double-dip MLB pick with plays on the home team and the ‘under.’
