Blake Snell is set to make his 2022 debut for the San Diego Padres on Wednesday in Philadelphia against the Phillies, and we’ve come up with a winning MLB pick for the matchup.

San Diego Padres vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Wednesday, May 18, 2022 – 06:45 PM EDT at Citizens Bank Park

A former Cy Young winner is set to make his season debut for San Diego when the Padres continue their series in Philadelphia on Wednesday’s baseball betting card. Whether or not the Phillies can answer that by having a 2-time MVP in their lineup remains to be seen.

San Diego drew first blood in the series with the winning MLB score on Tuesday when a trio of arms blanked a Philadelphia lineup that was missing reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper. Harper, who received an injection in his ailing right elbow prior to the game, is hitting .305 with 9 home runs and is officially listed as questionable for Wednesday’s clash.

Who Starts Today?

Blake Snell (0-0, 0.00), the 2018 AL Cy Young winner, is finally ready to take his turn in the Padres’ rotation, and he’ll be opposed by Zack Wheeler (1-3, 4.26) of the Phillies.

Heritage Sports (visit our Heritage Sports Review) is carrying Philadelphia as -145 home chalk, and most shops are listing 7½ for the total with a little extra juice on the ‘Over.’

MLB Series Recap

Mike Clevinger helped set the tone for San Diego in this series by starting a 3-0 whitewashing in Tuesday’s series opener. Wil Myers and Robinson Cano provided the bulk of offense for the Padres, while Clevinger and his bullpen limited the Phillies to just 5 hits – all singles – with 10 strikeouts against no free passes.

Clevinger himself got off to a late start to the season due to injury, and rookie MacKenzie Gore piggybacked with 3 relief innings in his first big league call from the bullpen. We should probably expect something similar on Wednesday when Snell’s outing is closely monitored for workload, leaving Nick Martinez as the best bet to be called upon in long relief.

The Phillies won four of six matchups a season ago, taking both 3-game series in Philadelphia and San Diego. Tuesday’s outcome was the seventh time in the last nine meetings for the ‘Under’ to cash at the top-rated sportsbooks.

Blake Snell: Pitching Analysis

This will be Snell’s first major league appearance since the middle of last September when he suffered a groin injury that followed him into Spring Training this year. He was set to pitch earlier in April but eventually landed back on the injury list with the same issue.

Snell made it through three rehab starts at three different farm levels without a problem, getting in a total of 13 innings of work with a sparkling 19/2 K/BB ratio.

He faced the Phillies twice a year ago, working 4 innings of shutout baseball in a Padres rout at Citizens Bank Park, and getting knocked around (5 IP, 3 ER) about six weeks later in San Diego.

Zack Wheeler: Pitching Analysis

Wheeler has been slowly but surely whittling his ERA down after the calculation took a major hit due to a couple of stinkers back in April when the Marlins and Brewers cracked down on him.

The 31-year-old missed about a week due to the flu and earned a no-decision (5.1 IP, 3 ER) last Thursday in LA where the Phillies posted a 9-7 win as +135 underdogs on the MLB odds.

Last year’s lone assignment against the Padres was a gem for Wheeler who pitched scoreless baseball into the eighth at home to help Philadelphia backers cash as small chalk. He’s been excellent at Citizens Bank Park since joining the Phillies before the 2020 campaign, posting a 2.30 ERA across 187.1 innings in 28 starts.

Who Will Be the Umpire?

Crew chief Marvin Hudson is set to call balls and strikes in the middle game of this set. Now in his 25th season as a major league arbiter, Hudson is 3-4-1 O/U/P in his 2022 plate assignments, and his two games at the dish in Philadelphia last season split the betting odds.

MLB Weather Today

There is a chance of rain in the City of Brotherly Love at some point Wednesday evening, though the weatherman is saying that won’t be until after this contest.

Look for cloudy skies, temps in the low-70s, and a light westerly breeze (left to right) at game time.

Padres vs. Phillies: Picks and Predictions

We’re probably looking at 3, maybe 4 innings tops out of Snell tonight, but I have enough confidence in San Diego relievers to make my play on the underdog and the ‘Under’ in this Hump Day collision.
