San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Thursday, 30 June 2022, 10:10 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium

Both teams enter on mini-slumps, having lost three of their last five. The Dodgers salvaged the last game of their series at Colorado on Wednesday, after losing the first two. They return home after a 6-3 road trip.

San Diego Padres Highlights

The Padres split two games with the Diamondbacks to start their current road trip, and San Diego has won just one of its last four series. The Padres closed out Arizona with a three-hit shutout on Wednesday.

It was the second time in five games that San Diego pitchers shut out an opponent. The Padres are currently second in the National League with a 3.48 ERA.

With seven starting pitchers giving the Padres the deepest rotation in baseball, San Diego’s minor league starters have begun working out of the bullpen to prepare in the role they’re most likely to see when they get the call-up to the big leagues.

San Diego has had hiccups on the mound recently, however. The Padres gave up seven runs in the first Arizona game and eight in the game before that—against the Phillies. They’ve surrendered five runs or more in six of their last seven losses, giving up 48 runs in the seven games.

Padres' Lineup

  • The Padres batters have also been up and down. San Diego’s last two losses came in games where San Diego scored six and five runs, and the Padres have scored four or fewer in five of their last six wins.
  • The Padres’ lineup should get a boost from Jake Cronenworth, who broke an 0-for-26 slump in their last game, getting two doubles and a single.
  • The Padres may also be close to getting back Manny Machado. The All-Star hasn’t played since June 19, but he’s run the bases without problem before each of the last two games.
  • San Diego will start the series with ace Joe Musgrove on the mound. He’s 8-1 with a 2.12 ERA.

Los Angeles Dodgers Highlights

After a nine-game road trip that took the Dodgers across the country, Los Angeles returns for its longest homestand of the season. The Padres series kicks off eleven straight at Dodger Stadium, with the last-place Rockies and sub-.400 Cubs following San Diego’s visit.

The Dodgers are being led at the plate by Freddie Freeman, who has navigated distractions to produce a hot streak. The road trip included the Dodgers’ first visit to Atlanta this season, reuniting Freeman, a lifelong Brave before this offseason, with his former teammates.

The tearful reunion included the former MVP receiving his Atlanta World Series ring from last season.

Freeman also had a split with his agents, who he reportedly blames for the failure of the negotiations that would have left him in Atlanta, while on the road trip. Despite the emotional tugs, Freeman has produced a 13-game hitting streak, including a home run in L.A.’s Wednesday win.

Mitch White gets the ball for Thursday’s series opener. He is 1-1, with a 4.25 ERA. He gave up three runs in four innings in his last start, his first in two and a half weeks.

Padres vs. Dodgers Betting Picks

The Padres have a big advantage on the mound. Getting Musgrove as an underdog is a bargain, regardless of the opponent. The Padres are 19-19 against winning teams this season and are 25-15 on the road.
