The start of the MLB season’s 10th week finds us in the Windy City looking at an intriguing matchup under the lights at Wrigley Field between the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres.

Following a disastrous weekend in the Bronx, the Chicago Cubs return to the friendly confines towing a 6-game losing streak that has them sinking towards the NL Central basement as they prepare to open a homestand against the San Diego Padres.

San Diego is beginning this road trip after missing a couple of opportunities over the weekend to take the lead in the NL West.

San Diego Padres vs. Chicago Cubs

Monday, June 13, 2022 – 08:05 PM EDT at Wrigley Field

Padres vs. Cubs: Today's Pitchers

  • The Padres will send veteran Yu Darvish (5-3, 3.61) to the mound.
  • The Chicago Cubs will start with Justin Steele (1-5, 4.79).

Rivalry Trends

A little more than a month has passed since the two teams met at Petco Park in San Diego, a series that is so far one of the few highlights of 2022 for the Cubs who took two of three from the Padres and earned close to two units of profit for bettors following Chicago at top-rated sportsbooks.

  • Chicago has either won or tied the last eight series, a streak that dates to May 2017.
  • The Cubs own a 278-228 advantage in the rivalry all-time.
  • Last year’s set at Wrigley saw the Cubs sweep the Padres out of Chicago while totals ran 0-2-1 O/U/P.
  • The ‘Over’ has a slight edge in the last 10 clashes played in Chicago (5-4-1 O/U/P).

Yu Darvish: Pitcher Analysis

Rebounding from a rough outing in St. Louis to begin June, Darvish had his A-game last Tuesday at home against New York, limiting the Mets to no runs and 2 hits over 7 innings of a 7-0 San Diego win as -130 chalk on the MLB odds board.

That victory over the Mets halted a mini 2-game losing streak for Darvish, who burned through exactly 100 pitches in the effort and left the Padres 7-4 in his assignments with a bottom line of about 2.75 units in profit so far in 2022.

Darvish missed the Cubs when the clubs met in San Diego earlier this season and lost to them in his only outing a year ago against his former team. This will be his first start at Wrigley Field since 2020 when he wore the Chicago uniform.

Justin Steele: Pitcher Analysis

This will be Steele’s first outing in a little more than a week, and like his counterpart on the mound Monday evening, his most recent effort was a good one (7 IP, 1 ER), though he only earned a no-decision in Chicago’s 11-inning, 5-3 upset of the Cardinals as a +125 underdog at Heritage Sports (visit our Heritage Sports Review).

One of the best things to say about Steele’s overall performance in 2022 is he has drastically cut his home run rate down with just two surrendered in 47 frames. Nonetheless, that advancement has come at the expense of a higher walk rate and slightly lower strikeout rate.

Steele will be facing the Padres for the first time in his career. In his seven starts on the bump at Wrigley Field this year, the Mississippi native is 1-3 – Chicago 3-4 – with a 3.69 ERA across 31.2 innings.

Padres vs. Cubs: Weather Report

The weatherman is listing a good chance for some potentially strong thunderstorms to pass through Chicago during the afternoon. But any rain should be long gone by game time when the forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, temps in the low-80s, and a 6-9 mph breeze from the south (out to left).

MLB Betting Pick for Today

The Cubs will end their losing streak at some point, but that won’t be tonight, when my MLB pick is on Yu and the visitors' moneyline.

Some betting outlets are bucking tradition by including a total for the contest in the overnight action, and the 8½-run target could find early bettors who played the ‘Over’ looking smart of those afternoon storms leave behind stronger winds blowing out.

Chicago favors the ‘Over’ by the slightest of margins with a 28-27-4 O/U/P record, though that has more to do with a Cubs' pitching staff that is 12th in the NL with a 4.59 ERA than it does their own lineup. San Diego, meanwhile, is no powerhouse at the plate either, with Padres' hitters last in the NL in the HR column which has played a role in the team having a slight ‘Under’ tendency on the season at 27-31-2 O/U/P.
