Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees

Wednesday, May 25, 2022 – 07:05 PM EDT at Yankee Stadium

The Orioles are going to have to beat some pretty stiff MLB odds that heavily favor the Yankees.

If nothing else, a win for Baltimore on Wednesday would be a morale booster of sorts since the Orioles haven’t won a series in New York against the Yankees in more than three years.

Today's Pitchers

A pair of young lefthanders are showing up and will be their respective team’s first line of defense for the rubber game of the set.

  • Baltimore Orioles Pitcher: Tyler Wells (1-3, 4.41)
  • New York Yankees Pitcher: JP Sears (1-0, 0.00)

The oddsmakers are giving some healthy respect to Sears in his first major league start with the Yankees priced -190 on the moneyline with 8½ for the total.

Orioles vs. Yankees: Series Recap

Despite Aaron Judge swatting 2 more home runs – upping his MLB-leading total to 17 – on Monday, the Orioles grabbed a 6-4 victory in the series opener to beat even bigger odds with the Yankees priced around -300 thanks to having Gerrit Cole on the mound.

New York evened the series Tuesday with a 7-6 decision. Gleyber Torres banged a pair of homers and Anthony Rizzo added his own blast to help the cause, but it was a walk-off single by 9th-place hitter Jose Trevino that ultimately decided the game.

Each of the first two games made it past the totals with relative ease, leaving the clubs 7-2 O/U since the ‘Under’ swept their first series of the season in Baltimore back in April. New York has won eight of the first 12 meetings in 2022 and is looking for its sixth-straight season win over Baltimore.

Tyler Wells: Pitching Analysis

Though still limited by a strict pitch count that has yet to exceed 80 in any of his eight starts this season, Wells has put together a decent May so far with a 3.66 ERA across four outings. His first two assignments of the month were solid efforts at home against Minnesota and Kansas City, but the last two against the Tigers and Rays have left a little to be desired.

Despite his career still being in its infancy, Wells has already piled up some experience against the Yankees with two starts against them in April and six relief appearances in the rivalry last season.

He went five innings and allowed 2 runs on April 27 at Yankee Stadium, settling for a no-decision in a 5-2 New York win as -240 chalk at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review).

JP Sears: Pitching Analysis

Groomed as a starter since being picked in the 11st-round of the 2017 draft by Seattle, Sears will be making his first big league assignment after appearing twice earlier in April out of the bullpen. A standout at The Citadel in his collegiate days, Sears made four starts and a couple of relief appearances at Triple-A this year, pitching to a 0.83 ERA with 30 K in 21.2 IP.

One of Sears’ April outings came in Baltimore where he stumbled into his first MLB win with a scoreless inning of relief in a 5-2 New York triumph as -175 chalk at the best sportsbooks and betting sites.

Though he’s not a big guy at 5-11, Sears saw an uptick in his speed last season and can bring it from the left side at 93 mph with a nice complimentary slider to keep hitters off-balance.

Who Will Be the Umpire?

Calling balls and strikes is Malachi Moore, who got his first taste of the big leagues in 2020 due to a shortage caused by the pandemic and continues to knock around the umpire ranks as a fill-in, which is what he’s doing this week as part of Bill Miller’s crew.

Moore is setting up behind the dish for just the second time in 2022, with his first plate assignment coming up short of a 7-run total.

The California native is 5-8-1 O/U/P on the MLB odds in the previous 14 times to have dish duty.

MLB Pick and Prediction

New York’s injured list includes the following players:

  • Aroldis Chapman (Achilles)
  • Giancarlo Stanton (Calf)
  • DJ LeMahieu (Wrist)
  • Joey Gallo (Illness)
  • Josh Donaldson (Illness)

Some of them might return for this series finale, and even without them, I’m liking New York on the run line in a 6-2 final.
