Our MLB picks schedule finds us in Milwaukee for a second consecutive night as the Brewers continue their long series with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Losing Tuesday’s tilt in Milwaukee did not cost the Los Angeles Dodgers any ground in the NL West standings, nor did the victory help the Brewers in the NL Central race, so the two sides will go back to work Wednesday evening to see if the result changes anything.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Milwaukee Brewers

Wednesday, August 17, 2022 – 08:10 PM EDT at American Family Field

Who Are Today's Starting Pitchers?

Wednesday’s probable pitchers are Tony Gonsolin (14-1, 2.24) of Los Angeles against Milwaukee southpaw Eric Lauer (8-4, 3.64).

Most of the country can tune into Fox Sports 1 for the prime-time broadcast that finds the Dodgers favored on the moneyline.

Series Notes

Los Angeles and Milwaukee needed a couple of extra frames to decide their matchup on Tuesday. The game was deadlocked at 3-apiece after 9 innings, and Victor Caratini delivered the decisive blow in the 11th with a 2-run single to walk off a 5-4 Brewers triumph that halted a 5-game win streak in the rivalry by the Dodgers.

Tuesday’s contest found the Dodgers a rare underdog, and it came after they opened the series with a 4-0 decision on Monday when Julio Urias started the shutout proceedings for LA while Freddie Freeman and Gavin Lux delivered home run pop.

Rivalry Trends

  • Caratini’s 2-run single sent the game past an 8-run total, the sixth time in the last seven meetings for ‘Over’ bettors to return to the pay window.
  • Milwaukee’s win marked the seventh time in the last eight clashes for the favorite to come out on top.

Pitchers Analysis

Tony Gonsolin

One of the frontrunners for the National League Cy Young Award, Gonsolin entered the 2022 campaign with 10 career wins to his credit and will be going after his 15th dubya of the season when he climbs the mound in Milwaukee.

Gonsolin is coming off a solid effort last Friday in Kansas City where he held the Royals to 2 hits and one run into the seventh inning, burning through 85 pitches at the time of his departure as the Dodgers coasted to an 8-3 decision as huge -247 chalk at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review).

Wednesday will be Gonsolin’s first career start against the Brewers. In five assignments against NL Central clubs this year, he is 3-0 with a 3.11 ERA (26 IP). Gonsolin is 6-0 with a 2.98 ERA in 11 road starts, with the Dodgers going 8-3 in those contests.

Eric Lauer

Two pitches cost Lauer and the Brewers last Friday in St. Louis. Milwaukee closed as a +150 underdog at the MLB odds and dropped a 3-1 decision to their division rivals. Lauer went 6 innings and all 3 Cardinals' runs came home on Nolan Arenado's and Paul Goldschmidt's home runs.

That outing followed two winning assignments in Boston and at home against Cincinnati, with Lauer working a combined 12 innings while allowing just a run each to the Red Sox and Reds while his lineup gave him a combined 14 runs of support.

Lauer went up against the Dodgers twice a year ago, pitching poorly (5 IP, 5 ER, 2 HR) in Los Angeles late in the season and beating them in his 2021 debut at home with 5 shutout frames. The 27-year-old is 4-1 with a 2.65 ERA in 11 home starts this year.

Who Is the Umpire Today?

Sean Barber is next up in the umpire rotation to call balls and strikes.

Number 29 in your umpire program and now working his ninth season at the big league level, Barber has a slight ‘Over’ lean in his 20 plate assignments this year with 11-9 O/U results at the best sportsbooks.

Dodgers vs. Brewers: MLB Best Bet for Today

Most of Wednesday will be spent under cloudy skies in Milwaukee, though none of them should produce rain and temps will be in the mid-70s at the start of the contest to leave the roof open at American Family Field for a third consecutive game.

One night after a 45-game streak for Los Angeles to be chalked came to an end, things return to normal on BMR’s live odds board with Gonsolin and the Dodgers running around -170 at most reputable shops.

Most outlets are carrying 8 for the scoreboard target, and juicing the ‘Over.’ A few spots are going with 8½ with plus-money on the high side, and it’s there that I’ll make my play in a contest that should reach the 9-run plateau once again.
